Lehigh splits pair of 4-3 games with Manhattan Wednesday

4/13/2016 8:02:00 PM | Softball

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – After dropping game one 4-3, the Lehigh softball team scored four runs in the fifth inning of game two to erase a 1-0 deficit and the Mountain Hawks held off a late Manhattan rally to win 4-3 and earn a doubleheader split Wednesday at Leadership Park.

Junior Vicky Lattanzio's two-out, two-run double gave the Mountain Hawks a 2-1 lead and freshman Emily Sorem allowed one earned run while striking out 10 to pick up the win in the pitcher's circle.

With the split, Lehigh stands at 25-9 on the season, while Manhattan moves to 17-11.

The visiting Jaspers took a 1-0 lead with an unearned run in the bottom of the second inning of game two as Rachael Mumma reached on an error and came around to score on a double by Emily Cutler.

Lehigh left the bases loaded in the bottom of the first and couldn't push runners home in the second or fourth innings. Back-to-back one-out singles from freshman Ashley Quidolit and sophomore Katie Schultz set the table for the Mountain Hawks in the fifth. Senior Morgan Decker struck out for the second out but Lattanzio laced a double to left center, scoring Quidolit and Schultz to give Lehigh a 2-1 lead. Seniors Jessica Calvini and MacKenzie Velasquez followed with a RBI double and single respectively, as Lehigh plated two more runs in the inning to lead 4-1 after five.

"Vicky had the big hit there with a clutch double," Lehigh head coach Fran Troyan said. "Then Cal (Jess Calvini) came up with a double and Mac (MacKenzie Velasquez) came up after that, but that was really our only good inning offensively the entire day."

Manhattan made things interesting in the seventh as a Lehigh defensive miscue and a single gave the Jaspers runners on first and second with no outs. The runners moved up on a wild pitch but Sorem struck out Cutler for the first out of the inning. Three consecutive singles brought the Jaspers within 4-3 and loaded the bases with one out. Briana Matazinsky grounded to first with Calvini forcing the tying run at the plate for the second out. Sorem then froze Stephanie Reinhardt on a 3-2 pitch for her game-ending 10th strikeout.

Sorem finished with a line of one earned run on six hits with three walks and the 10 strikeouts as she improves to 11-4 on the season.

Stephanie Kristo took the loss for Manhattan, allowing four runs on seven hits in 4.2 innings. Velasquez finished with two of Lehigh's seven hits in the nightcap.

Manhattan used a pair of home runs to take a 3-0 lead in game one but the Mountain Hawks were never able to climb all the way back. Matazinsky led off the second inning with a home run off junior Christine Campbell. In the third, the Jaspers made Campbell pay for a two-out walk when Elena Bowman took Campbell out to right center for a two-run home run.

Lehigh put two runners on with no outs in the second but was unable to break through. The Mountain Hawks cut the deficit to 3-2 in the fourth as sophomore Carolyn Wright doubled home junior Ashley Cole, while Schultz followed with a RBI groundout that scored Calvini but Matazinsky got Velasquez to ground out with the tying run at third base.

A walk, a hit batter and a fielder's choice loaded the bases for Manhattan in the fifth, with pinch hitter Anna Crowley extending the Jaspers' lead with a RBI groundout. Lehigh nearly pulled a run back in the sixth but Wright was thrown out at the plate on a terrific throw by Cutler following a pinch-hit single by Lattanzio.

Lehigh did not go quietly in the seventh, loading the bases with one out after a hit by pitch, fielder's choice, single and walk. Calvini grounded into a fielder's choice bringing sophomore Rachel Timberman home with Lehigh's third run but Matazinsky struck out Wright to end the game with the tying and winning runs on base.

Matazinsky earned the win by allowing three runs on eight hits with three walks and five strikeouts.

Campbell took the loss for Lehigh allowing four runs on six hits. She struck out seven and walked one but falls to 14-5. Eight different players recorded hits for Lehigh in game one, while Cole reached base three times behind a hit and two walks.

"Honestly, we didn't play very well today," Troyan said. "I wish we would've come out with a little bit more enthusiasm. We were lucky to win the second game. Manhattan came here with a lot of energy and played very well today. Emily Sorem pitched pretty well for six innings or so but Christine Campbell wasn't very sharp. It's going to be a new day this weekend."

Lehigh returns to Patriot League play this weekend with three games at Army West Point in a matchup of the top two teams in the league standings. Saturday's doubleheader will begin at 1 p.m. from West Point, N.Y. with Sunday's single game set for a noon start.
