BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh softball team heads to Philadelphia on Wednesday for a non-league doubleheader against Penn, with game one set for a 3 p.m. start from Penn Park.
The Mountain Hawks (19-7) are coming off of a three-game sweep of rival Lafayette last weekend to begin Patriot League play. Sophomore outfielder Nicole Yozzo helped propel the team's offensive attack by going 6-for-13 at the plate over the course of the three games. Playing in two of the three Mountain Hawk wins, sophomore catcher Carolyn Wright went 4-for-5 with three RBIs, including the game-winning RBI single in the ninth inning of Saturday's second game. Senior first baseman Jessica Calvini batted .389 over Lehigh's five games last week and was named Patriot League Player of the Week on Monday after posting five RBIs in five games last week, including the go-ahead two-run double in Lehigh's win in the series finale against the Leopards.
Junior pitcher Christine Campbell earned the win in both end of Saturday's doubleheader while freshman Emily Sorem got the win for Sunday's contest, allowing just one unearned run in Lehigh's 4-1 win. Campbell was named Patriot League Pitcher of the Week on Monday.
The Penn Quakers (11-7) will host Lehigh in their final tune-up before Ivy League play begins this weekend. The Quakers, who are 3-1 this season against Patriot League competition after games against Lafayette and Army West Point, have won three of their last four games and eight of their last 10. Freshman infielder Sam Pederson has helped anchor the Quaker offense with her team-high batting average of .432. Pederson will be joined by junior outfielder Leah Allen whose 10 runs scored, five home runs and 23 RBI's are all team-highs.
Lehigh will likely face Penn's pitching duo of junior Alexis Sargent and sophomore Mason Spichiger. Sargent has posted a record of 8-1 this season with an ERA of just 1.01. She is joined by Spichiger who is 2-1 on the year with an ERA of 2.65.
The Mountain Hawks shut out the Quakers in both ends of their doubleheader last season, winning 10-0 and 3-0 on March 18, 2015. Campbell won the nightcap while Calvini recorded five hits, three RBI's and three runs scored in the two contests. Lehigh leads the all-time series 39-22-2.
Following Wednesday's doubleheader, the Mountain Hawks will travel to Boston for a three-game series with the Boston University Terriers, April 2-3.
