Lehigh sweeps Wednesday doubleheader at Penn

PHILADELPHIA – The Lehigh softball team extended its winning streak to six games with a doubleheader sweep of Penn Wednesday at Penn Park. Junior Christine Campbell threw a three-hit shutout as the Mountain Hawks broke a scoreless tie with four runs in the top of the eighth to take the opener 4-0. Lehigh raced to a 6-0 lead in game two before holding on for a 6-3 victory.

The two victories improve Lehigh's record to 21-7 while Penn falls to 11-9.

Freshman Ashley Quidolit went 4-for-4 in game two while seniors Alexis Watanabe and Morgan Decker each had three hits combined over the two games.

Penn pitchers Alexis Sargent and Courtney Cuzick limited Lehigh to just one hit and three baserunners through the first six innings of game one, with two of the three baserunners erased trying to steal.

The Quakers got a runner to third base in the third inning and had two runners on in the fourth and sixth frames but Campbell kept Penn off the board.

Lehigh stranded two runners in the top of the seventh, and after a 1-2-3 bottom of the seventh the Mountain Hawks finally got to Cuzick for four runs in the top of the eighth. After a hit batter and a bunt single Lehigh moved runners to second and third with one out. Senior MacKenzie Velasquez brought classmate Jessica Calvini home with a ground out to second base. Watanabe followed with a RBI single to center, scoring junior Ashley Cole to put Lehigh up 2-0. Decker then followed with her fifth home run of the season, a two-run line drive to right, to cap the four run inning. The home run put Decker over 150 RBIs for her career.

Campbell set the Quakers down in order in the bottom of the eighth to complete her first solo shutout of the season. She allowed three hits and walked one while striking out nine to improve to 12-3 on the season.

Watanabe had two of Lehigh's six hits in game one.

The Mountain Hawks struck early in game two as Quidolit and Watanabe began the game with back-to-back singles before Decker doubled home Quidolit to put Lehigh in front 1-0. A sacrifice fly by junior Vicky Lattanzio and a RBI single by Velasquez scored Watanabe and Decker to give Lehigh a 3-0 advantage after half an inning of play.

Lehigh had base runners in six of seven innings and pounded out 17 hits in game two but also left 11 runners on base.

Velasquez and Calvini opened the top of the third with consecutive singles and two batters later, sophomore Rachel Timberman singled home Velasquez. A sacrifice fly by Quidolit scored Calvini to put the Mountain Hawks ahead 5-0 in the middle of the third inning.

Decker led off the fourth inning with her second double of the game and pinch runner Brianna Gerhardt scored when sophomore Cassie Lajeunesse reached on an error.

Penn got three runs back in the fifth on a Lauren Li RBI single and a two-run triple by Leah Allen. While Lehigh was unable to add to its lead over the final two innings, freshman Emily Sorem worked around a hit and two walks in the sixth and a one-out double in the seventh to close out the game two victory.

Sorem improved to 9-4 on the season allowing three runs on nine hits with three walks and four strikeouts. Mason Spichiger took the loss for Penn allowing five runs in two-plus innings.

In addition to Quidolit's 4-for-4 performance, Decker, Velasquez, Timberman, senior Carissa Zito and sophomore Katie Schultz all had two hits in the nightcap. Decker finished the day at 199 hits for her career.

The Mountain Hawks will play their first Patriot League road series of 2016 when they head to Boston University for three games this weekend. Lehigh and Boston U. will play a doubleheader Saturday with first pitch for game one set for noon and then a single game on Sunday also beginning at
