BRONX, N.Y. – The Lehigh softball team saw its six-game winning streak come to an end with a 1-0 loss to Fordham Tuesday afternoon at Murphy Field. The two teams combined for just four hits on this frigid April day but a two-out, bases-loaded infield single delivered the only run of the game for the Rams, while Lauren Quense and Linsday Mayer limited the Mountain Hawks to just one hit.
Lehigh falls to 21-8 with the loss, while Fordham wins its sixth straight to improve to 22-15. The Rams have now won 16 of their last 18 games.
Mayer led off the bottom of the second with a single and the Rams eventually loaded the bases with two outs after a pair of fielder's choices a hit batter and a walk. Morgan Figueroa put Fordham in front with a RBI single to shortstop, scoring Cailin Wonokur, before senior Jessica Calvini threw Ally Vergona out at the plate to end the inning.
Watanabe led off the fourth with a single to left center, but was erased on a caught stealing.
Junior Christine Campbell gave up just one hit after the second inning, and Jessica Hughes was called out for leaving first base early after her leadoff single in the third inning. Campbell took the loss, allowing a run on three hits in four innings with a walk and a hit batter. She falls to 12-4. Freshman Emily Sorem retired all six batters she faced with three strikeouts in two scoreless frames of relief.
Quense earned the win for Fordham, allowing the one hit in five innings while striking out three and walking two. Mayer walked senior Morgan Decker with one out in the seventh, but bounced back to strike out junior Vicky Lattanzio and got Calvini to pop out to earn her first save.
Lattanzio drew a leadoff walk in the second, but freshman Jen Stoll was caught stealing. Freshman Ashley Quidolit drew a two-out walk in the third and moved to second on a passed ball but was stranded.
