Lehigh beats Lafayette 4-1 to wrap up weekend sweep

3/27/2016 2:38:00 PM | Softball

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Trailing 1-0, the Lehigh softball team scored four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, which proved to be enough as the Mountain Hawks topped rival Lafayette 4-1 at Leadership Park Sunday. Senior Jessica Calvini came through with a big two-run double to give her squad a 2-1 lead as the Mountain Hawks wouldn't look back. Freshman Emily Sorem impressed in the circle, pitching all seven innings while not allowing an earned run.

Sorem allowed six hits, one unearned run, one walk and five strikeouts to bounce back from a tough outing on Saturday.

"It was important for us that Emily get right back on the horse right away," said Lehigh head coach Fran Troyan. "She didn't throw to her ability level yesterday and she knew that. The book would say go with Christine Campbell because she pitched really well yesterday, but we need to have two outstanding pitchers in order to do damage in the Patriot League. We know that Emily is an outstanding pitcher and she certainly pitched a very strong game today."

Six different Mountain Hawks tallied at least one hit in a balanced team effort. Sophomore Nicole Yozzo led the way by finishing 2-for-3, along with a walk. Calvini was 1-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored. Senior Morgan Decker and sophomore Lindsay Phillips recorded Lehigh's other RBI.

Scoreless through two innings, Lafayette got on the board first in the third. After a leadoff double by Miranda Skurla, Sorem recorded two outs, but a single to right field, along with a fielding error on the same play, led to Skurla crossing the plate to give the Leopards a 1-0 lead.

In the bottom of the fourth, senior Mackenzie Velasquez reached on an error, then Carolyn Wright hit a single to left field, bringing Calvini to the plate. The senior first baseman promptly hit a double to left-center field, plating both runners and giving the Mountain Hawks a 2-1 lead.

"It was a big, big hit in a big moment because we were down at the time," said Troyan. "That hit gave us some momentum, which carried us through, and we scored some extra runs as well."

Lehigh added two more runs in the fourth, on a squeeze bunt from Phillips and a sacrifice fly from Decker, to take a 4-1 lead.

Lafayette immediately put together a rally, loading the bases with no outs, but Sorem came up big in the pitching circle. Following a strikeout, the Mountain Hawks turned a ground ball to second base into a force out at home plate. Phillips ended the inning with a nifty play at shortstop, moving to her right and getting the force out at third base to keep Lehigh by three.

Sorem shut down the Leopards the rest of the way, holding them to no hits and just one baserunner over the final two innings as Lehigh improved to 19-7 overall and 3-0 in Patriot League play.

"Anytime that you're at home, you want to try and get as many wins as possible," said Troyan. "The games are going to be very competitive all year within the Patriot League, so a 3-0 start is certainly better than 2-1, 1-2 or 0-3."

Sorem improved to 8-4 with the victory while Stacy Gordon took the loss for Lafayette.

The Mountain Hawks return to action on Wednesday when they travel to Penn to face the Quakers for a doubleheader. First pitch of Game 1 is set for 3 p.m.
