BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh women's basketball team fell to Rider 75-68 on Thursday evening at Stabler Arena. Freshman Cameryn Benz totaled career-highs with 12 points and three blocks to go with six rebounds and two steals. Junior Quinci Mann (14 points) and freshman Hannah Hedstrom (10 points) also scored in double figures for Lehigh. Junior Bernadette Devaney scored nine points on 3-of-4 shooting, while Taylor Campbell and Hailey Pascoe added seven points apiece. The Mountain Hawks (5-5) turned the ball over 20 times on a night when both teams shot exactly 46.4 percent from the field. Rider held a 50-22 advantage in the paint, plus a 13-2 edge in second chance points. Rider's Robin Perkins led all scorers with 19 points on the night to help the Broncs improve to 6-2 on the season.
"I thought Rider played well and we did a poor job of defending and stopping them, particularly in the paint," said head coach Sue Troyan. "They had their way with us tonight."
Rider leapt out to a quick 5-0 lead before Mann sank a jumper off an assist from Camryn Buhr to get Lehigh on the board. The Broncs came back with four quick points in the next 50 seconds to take a 9-2 lead and force a Lehigh timeout. Trailing 12-4, Hedstrom added five straight points to spark an 11-2 run, which ended with Campbell driving the lane for a layup to put Lehigh up for the first time at 15-14. Rider would respond with a 10-0 run of its own that bridged the final 1:21 of the first quarter and the start of the second quarter.
Devaney and Benz added back-to-back three-pointers to get back within 26-21 at the 7:08 mark. Lehigh slowly chipped away at the deficit, getting within five on a Campbell triple and got to within two at 32-30 following a pair of Devaney free throws with 2:42 left until halftime. Benz sank a three-pointer to get back within two, before Buhr hit a jumper with 1:18 to go to knot the score at 35-35. Rider regained the lead at 37-35 going into the locker room on a layup with seven seconds remaining.
Coming out of halftime, Rider to ran off the first 11 points of the half to extend the lead up to 48-36 by the 7:19 mark. The lead would get up to a game-high 12 points on two separate occasions before the Mountain Hawks answered with a 10-2 run of their own to cut it to 50-46 with less than two minutes remaining in the quarter.
After Rider scored four points to take a 54-46 advantage into the fourth quarter, Lehigh was able to keep the game within single digits, getting as close as four within the opening minute after a three-pointer by Mann. After trading buckets throughout most of the period, Hedstrom banked in a three to make it 72-68 with just over one minute remaining, but the Broncs added three insurance points and forced a miss and a turnover on defense to lock down the 75-68 victory.
"Every time we made a run, they had a response, and that's probably indicative of a senior laden team," Troyan said. "They did a good job of responding every time we tried to get over the hump."
Lehigh will now head to the west coast for its next matchup on Sunday afternoon at Cal-Berkeley. Tip-off is set for 5 p.m. EST/2 p.m. PST.
