EVANSTON, Ill. – Lehigh true freshman Jordan Wood reached the finals of the prestigious Midlands Championships, leading the way for a contingent of four Mountain Hawks, who competed in the two-day event which wrapped-up Friday at Northwestern's Welsh-Ryan Arena. Competing unattached at heavyweight, Wood's bid to become Lehigh's first true freshman Midlands champion came to an end with a 4-1 loss to Arizona State's Tanner Hall.

In addition to Wood, true freshmen Luke Karam and Chris Weiler competed unattached at 133 and 184, respectively. Deferred freshman Andrew Price also competed at 184.

Wood, the No. 13 seed in the tournament, earned a spot in the finals when Wisconsin's top seeded Connor Medberry medically forfeited out of the tournament prior to Friday afternoon's semifinal round. In the finals Wood and Hall, the No. 2 seed who is ranked fourth by InterMat traded escapes in the second and third periods, but a third period takedown and riding time advantage provided the three-point margin for the 24-year-old Sun Devil sophomore.

On Thursday's first day of competition, Wood went 4-0, including victories over the No. 4 and No. 5 seeds. Wood used a reversal to defeat No. 4 Brooks Black of Illinois 2-1 in the round of 16 and then took No. 5 Collin Jensen of Nebraska down twice in a 5-3 decision in the quarterfinals.

Karam and Weiler both advanced to Friday's placement round but came up one win shy of earning a spot on the podium. On Thursday, Karam downed the No. 13 and No. 4 seeds, highlighted by a 2-1 win over Iowa State All-American Earl Hall but dropped his quarterfinal bout 9-1 to Jamal Morris of North Carolina State. In the round of 12, Karam dropped a 4-2 decision to No. 11 seed Scott Delvecchio of Rutgers.

Weiler ran into top seed and eventual champion TJ Dudley of Nebraska in the round of 16 on Thursday but advanced to day two with a pair of consolation victories, including a 38 second fall against Bryce Gorman of Northern Illinois. He drew No. 2 seed Myles Martin of Ohio State in the round of 12 but dropped a 7-3 decision to the 2016 NCAA Champion at 174.

Price was the only Mountain Hawk who competed attached, but dropped both of his bouts on Thursday and did not advance to day two.

While Lehigh's three unattached entries did not figure in the team scoring, the trio of Karam, Weiler and Wood combined to score 27 points, with Wood contributing 19, Weiler five and Karam three.

Sixteen Mountain Hawks, including most Lehigh regulars, will compete in the 2017 Southern Scuffle, presented by Compound Clothing, Jan. 1-2 in Chattanooga, Tenn.
