BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Riding two straight wins against quality opponents and the program's first-ever win over the SEC, the Lehigh men's basketball team will have a quick turnaround when it plays at Arkansas State Sunday. Opening tipoff is set for 2:30 p.m. ET (1:30 p.m. locally). The Mountain Hawks are coming off an impressive 87-73 win over Mississippi State on Friday, a game Lehigh led by double digits for the game's final 15:17.
Â
Sunday will be a homecoming game for junior Kahron Ross, who is a Jonesboro native, which is the location of Arkansas State. Ross has played several games in the ASU Convocation Center in the past, playing in various tournaments.
Â
Six Mountain Hawks scored double-figure points Friday, the first time five Lehigh players have reached double figures since last November 16 at Canisius. It was the first time six reached double figures in Brett Reed's 10 seasons as head coach. Ross and sophomore Kyle Leufroy each led the way with a game-high 18 points. Ross scored 13 of his points in the second half, including seven over the first 1:23 of the second stanza. He finished 7-of-11 from the field, including 3-of-5 from three-point range. Celebrating his birthday, Leufroy was 8-of-11, including 2-of-3 from long range.
Â
Also reaching double-figure points was senior Austin Price (14), senior Tim Kempton (13), sophomore Matt Holba (11) and freshman Pat Andree (11). Despite battling foul trouble, Kempton scored nine second-half points, including seven in the span of 45 seconds late in the half to help Lehigh take its largest lead of the game at 80-59 with exactly five minutes remaining. He enters Sunday's game at Arkansas State needing just 18 points for 1,500 in his career. Meanwhile, Price was 4-of-6 from three-point range as Lehigh's starting backcourt was a combined 9-of-14 (64 percent) from long distance. Individually, Price is 7-of-11 from three-point range over his last two games (64 percent). With his 14 points, he moved from 31st to 29th in school history in career points, currently owning 1,067. The Mountain Hawks scored a season-high 87 points, their most points against a power conference opponent since scoring 87 in a 93-87 loss at Notre Dame on Nov. 27, 2006.
Â
Lehigh's defense also stepped up on Friday. After allowing 17 points over the game's first 7:08, the Mountain Hawks allowed just 12 for the rest of the half and only 39 points over the next 26:53. The win marked Lehigh's third over the last three seasons against power conference foes, also beating DePaul and Arizona State during the 2014-15 campaign. For the game, the Mountain Hawks shot 52 percent from the floor (34-of-66), already the third time in four games this season Lehigh has shot 50 percent or higher. From three-point range, the Mountain Hawks shot 42 percent (11-of-26), their second straight game with at least 10 makes from long range.
Â
Arkansas State has enjoyed a strong start to the season, standing 5-1 highlighted by a big 78-72 win at Georgetown. Since a season-opening loss at North Dakota State, the Red Wolves have won five in a row, most recently beating SIU Edwardsville on Tuesday, 75-57. Devin Carter leads the team in scoring averaging 14.5 points per game while Donte Thomas (11.3) and Rashad Lindsey (10.3) also average double figures. Thomas leads the team in assists (7.0 per game) while he's one of three players who lead the team in rebounding (4.3). One of Arkansas State's wins came against Army West Point out of the Patriot League, 60-57. For the season, the Red Wolves are shooting 50.5 percent from the field while opponents are hitting just 22.7 percent of their three-pointers.
Â
Sunday will mark the first-ever meeting between Lehigh and Arkansas State.
Â
Following Sunday's game, the Mountain Hawks will return to Pennsylvania for a Wednesday evening road trip at La Salle. Gametime is set for 7 p.m.
