Lehigh Pulls Away Late for 74-57 Win at Mount St. Mary’s

11/22/2016 7:08:00 PM | Women's Basketball

EMMITSBURG, Md. – The Lehigh women's basketball team used a season-high 23 points from junior Quinci Mann and a career-high 14 points and three steals from freshman Hannah Hedstrom to pull away from Mount Saint Mary's 74-57 on Tuesday afternoon. Both players added three rebounds and two assists, while freshman Gena Grundhoffer added eight points, eight rebounds, three steals and three assists. Junior Bernadette Devaney was 2-of-5 from three-point range in a six-point performance, and junior Mae Williams set a new career-high with seven rebounds. Lehigh improves to 4-1 on the season with their third win in a row, while The Mount falls to 1-4.

Lehigh opened up the scoring just 10 seconds in following a scrum off the opening tip, where Grundhoffer sent a pass to Camryn Buhr who was all by herself for the open layup to give Lehigh the lead. Both teams combined to shoot just 3-of-20 going into the first media timeout. The two teams went back and forth until Mann sank a three-pointer at the 7:32 mark of the second quarter to put Lehigh on top 19-16, capping a run of eight straight Lehigh points by Mann. The streak was part of an 11-0 run by the Mountain Hawks as Hedstrom added a pair of layups, sandwiched around a Grundhoffer basket to put Lehigh on top 25-16.

The Mountaineers answered strong to chip into the deficit and eventually retake the lead at 31-30 with 1:22 remaining in the first half. The 15-5 run featured a three-pointer by Katrice Dickson, who scored all 16 of her points in the opening half, which cut the Mountain Hawk lead to 30-26 at the 3:24 mark. After The Mount took a 31-30 lead on a three pointer from Stacey Koutris with 1:22 to go, Taylor Campbell answered at the Lehigh end with a long three of her own to stake the Brown and White to the 33-31 lead they would carry into halftime.

Lehigh shot 44.4 percent (8-for-18) in the second quarter after a 4-for-15 start to shoot 36.4 percent from the field in the opening 20 minutes. The Mountaineers held a shooting percentage of 40 percent (12-for-30) through the first half of play.

Coming out in the third quarter, The Mount was able to get within one point after a Kathleen Belanger-Finn bucket made it 39-38 with six minutes remaining in the period. Hedstrom and Grundhoffer added layups and a three pointer from Bernadette Devaney helped get the lead back to six at 46-40. A pair of free throws from Mann helped balloon the lead to eight before the Mountaineers cut it to four in the final seconds, allowing Lehigh to take a 50-46 lead into the final quarter.

The Mountain Hawks saved their best for last, outscoring Mount St. Mary's 24-11 over the final 10 minutes, while shooting 57 percent (8-for-14) and outscoring The Mount 16-0 in the paint. A pair of free throws from Buhr and a layup by Grundhoffer gave Lehigh its first double digit lead of the ballgame at 60-50 with 5:26 on the clock. Hedstrom followed with a layup on the next trip down the court and Hailey Pascoe added two free throws to give Lehigh a 13-point edge of 64-51.

Hedstrom sank a jumper with 2:40 remaining and another one with just under a minute to go, both of which gave Lehigh 15-point leads. Freshman Paige Galiani scored her first collegiate points on a layup with three seconds left off the assist from Mann to put a cap on the 74-57 win.

"I thought we defended really well in the fourth quarter and that led to some easier transition buckets," said head coach Sue Troyan. "I thought Hannah really played great game as the point guard on both ends of the floor and really disrupted Mount St. Mary's offensive flow. She did a good job of reading when she could get to the basket to finish at the rim and made good decisions with the basketball.

"Quinci let the game come to her and didn't force things," Troyan said. "She played well on the defensive end and that's one of the biggest improvements I've seen from her play. We knew she could score, but she's really committed to the defensive end and playing really strong team defense."

Lehigh will return home for a three game home stand beginning this Saturday with the Christmas City Classic. The Mountain Hawks will take on Norfolk State this Saturday at 4 p.m., and play either Hartford or Monmouth on Sunday.
