All-Around Effort Leads Lehigh to 1-0 Win Over Boston

10/22/2016 10:50:00 PM | Men's Soccer

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh men's soccer team picked up a much needed Patriot League victory on Saturday night to remain in the hunt for a PL playoff spot following a 1-0 win over Boston University at home. The Mountain Hawks improve to 2-4-0 in the Patriot League, 6-8-1 overall and move up to seventh place in the conference standings. The Terriers fall to 1-3-2 in the PL, 5-6-2 overall and are ninth in the PL standings.

"We were able to come away with three points in a Patriot League game against a good team and that's the most important thing tonight," said head coach Dean Koski. "I think our team did a good job of following the game plan. I thought we played well at both ends and especially defended well."

Doyle Tuvesson posted a tally in the 48th minute and that would hold up as the game-winner. Tuvesson received a feed from Justin Worely up the right side and finished with a low strike to the back of the net. Tuvesson has the game-winning goals from both of Lehigh's wins this week.

Goalkeeper Will Smith had a brilliant performance in goal for the Mountain Hawks. The freshman tied his season high with eight saves and disrupted numerous chances for Boston on the way to his second clean sheet of the season.

"Will was big for us today and he showed what he is capable of doing," said Koski. "If he can continue to be at that level that is good for us because we need that kind of performance heading into this stretch."

Lehigh had few quality chances in the first half, but had one golden opportunity in the 24th minute following a corner when Danny Gonzalez ripped a strike through traffic only to be met by a stellar diving save by BU keeper Matt Gilbert.

Shortly after taking the lead, Smith helped preserve the advantage with a superb save in the 53rd minute. Boston had a two-on-one and chipped the ball into the box where Smith snuffed out the opportunity with a save on a shot from point blank range.

Smith came up with another big save in the 61st minute to preserve the lead as got a hand on a quick redirection off a header attempt from the six-yard line.

The Mountain Hawks had a prime opportunity to put the game away in the 72nd minute after precise passing in the box led to an open look on goal for Gonzalez, but his attempt found the crossbar and deflected harmlessly out of the way.

Lehigh has three games remaining in the regular season, all against Patriot League opponents. The Mountain Hawks will travel to Lafayette next Wednesday for another critical PL contest. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m.
