Penalty Kick Lifts Lafayette to 1-0 Victory Over Lehigh

10/26/2016 10:49:00 PM | Men's Soccer

EASTON, Pa – The Lehigh men's soccer ends up on the losing end of a hard-fought battle on the road with rival Lafayette on Wednesday that resulted in a 1-0 victory for the Leopards. The lone tally of the game came on a converted penalty kick by Lafayette's Ryan Egan in the 69th minute.

Lehigh falls to 6-9-1 overall and 2-5-0 in the Patriot League, while Lafayette improves to 7-7-2 overall and 3-3-1 in conference play. Lehigh drops to ninth in Patriot League standings, but remains in the hunt for a playoff spot with two games remaining, beginning with a trip to Bucknell on Saturday.

"It is disappointing that we did not get the win, but I can not say I am disappointed with how we played through most of the game," said head coach Dean Koski. "On the defensive end we did a good job of not giving them many good looks on goal. Unfortunately, we did not do enough in the offensive third to create more opportunities and we will work to fix that before our next game. We can not dwell on this. We just need to move on to Bucknell."

The Mountain Hawks controlled most of the possession to the midway point of the first, but had only one shot to show for it.

A quality chance finally developed for Lehigh in the 28th minute as Doyle Tuvesson collected the ball in the midfield and facilitated a breakout. Mark Forrest received a feed from Tuvessson in the right side of the box and sent his shot just over the crossbar as he had an open look on goal.

Jack Miskel created another chance for Lehigh in the first half as he maneuvered into shooting space, but sent his shot just high of the net in the 38th minute of play.

Lafayette brought pressure late in the first half with corner, but goalkeeper Will Smith preserved the scoreless draw heading into halftime with the game's first save.

Lafayette's Evan Vare nearly broke the scoreless tie in the 53rd minute as settled a loose ball off a corner 10 yards out from the end line. Fortunately for Lehigh, Vare's shot went just wide of the net as he tried to slip it through traffic.

Leopard goalkeeper Brad Seeber robbed Lehigh of a goal in the 57th minute to preserve the draw to that point as he snared a shot by Tuvesson following a quality set up by Forrest.

Following a loose ball scramble after a Lafayette blocked shot, the Leopards received a call in their favor and were awarded a penalty kick as the foul occurred inside the box. Egan took the penalty for Lafayette and buried his shot in the left side of the net.

The Mountian Hawks nearly responded just moments later as Tuvesson unleashed a bullet from the right side, but a stellar sprawling save by Seeber prevented Lehigh from mounting the quick counter.

Immediately after the Lehigh counter, Lafayette came with a rush of its own, but Smith laid out to his right and got enough of a hand on the ball to deflect the shot wide of the net.

After a period of back-and-forth play, Lehigh generated a chance as Miskel maneuvered through defenders and put a solid connection on a shot from just outside the 18-yard line, but Seeber was there to make the save once again.

Lehigh made one last attempt at an equalizer in the 88th minute as a Forrest header attempt as stopped by Seeber. A scramble for the loose ball ensued, but the Mountain Hawks were unable to come up with second chance.

The Mountain Hawks are still in contention for one of the top-six spots in the Patriot League standings and a chance to qualify for the postseason following Wednesday's loss to Lafayette. Lehigh will travel to Bucknell on Saturday for a critical contest which will get underway at 2 p.m. The Bison hold currently sit sixth in the PL standings with 10 points, while Lehigh sits in ninth with six points on the season. A win on Saturday would give the Brown and White three points and remain in the hunt going into the final game.
