PHILADELPHIA - The Lehigh rowing team opened up the fall season with a strong performance at the Navy Day Regatta on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia. The day was highlighted by the Women's Freshmen Four and Eight, along with the Men's Varsity Four, who all impressed in their first action of the year.

"With it being our first race, I think the effort was there," said Lehigh head coach Brian Conley. "There were some things we need to continue to work on as we continue the process of making our team a championship team."

Lehigh's best performance came from the Women's Freshmen Four, who finished second out of 13 crews with a time of 17:57.83. The Women's Freshmen Eight also placed fifth out of 16 crews, finishing in 17:00.61.

"The freshmen women's boats went out there and didn't think about anything other than moving their boat as fast as they could," said Conley.

Meanwhile, the Men's Collegiate Four opened up the day, and Lehigh's season, by placing seventh out of 15 crews with a time of 15:16.78.

"The men's crew demonstrated the ability and the power to compete, but they have some things to work on, which showed in the results," said Conley.

The Mountain Hawks will return to action next weekend when they head to the prestigious Head of the Charles in Boston.

"In general, the fall racing is all about gaining good race experience and I think today, we allowed ourselves the opportunity to show what we can do and what we've been working on in practice," said Conley. "Our two collegiate fours will race at the Head of the Charles, so we're looking to build upon what we did this weekend to get the race jitters out of them and hopefully be ready to go next weekend."
