Mountain Hawks Suffer 1-0 Defeat at Colgate

HAMILTON, N.Y. – A Colgate tally in the third minute held up as the eventual game-winner as the Lehigh men's soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision on the road on Saturday. Lehigh is now 3-6-1 overall with a Patriot League record of 0-2, while Colgate improves to 6-3 and 1-1 in the PL.
The Mountain Hawks have been bitten by the early deficit bug in both Patriot League games this season. Last Saturday, Holy Cross put a tally on the board in the second minute and put the pressure on Lehigh to fight from behind for the entire game. Similar story on Saturday as Colgate jumped on the board in the opening minutes and held the advantage on the scoreboard in what turned out to be a rather evenly matched contest.
"Giving up early goal is always hard on the road especially when you get into Patriot League play," said head coach Dean Koski. "We did a really job of battling back and the effort was where it needed to be. We just struggled to execute in the final third and we were pressing because we were fighting an uphill battle the whole way."
Lehigh had some chances at an equalizer in the first half with three corner kicks in span of three minutes, beginning with the first in the 28th minute. The Mountain Hawks produced two shots off those corners, but attempts by Doyle Tuvesson and Danny Gonzalez were both blocked.
Lehigh brought the pressure early on in the second half with three shots on goal. Tuvesson had two attempts in the 54th and 55th minute, and Oscar Greene added a third chance in the 57th minute.
Tommy Dokho produced another chance in the 60th minute for Lehigh, but his header attempt was also saved.
Colgate goalkeeper Ricky Brown made five saves on the night in his 90 minutes of work and claimed his fifth clean sheet of the season.
Lehigh goalkeeper Will Smith was credited with his first career loss as he is 1-1-1 through his three starts of his freshman season. Smith finished with four saves on the night and has a total of 11 on the season.
The Mountain Hawks will return home on Wednesday to continue their PL schedule in matchup with Navy. Kickoff at the Ulrich Sports Complex is slated for 7 p.m.
