Mountain Hawks host defending champion American Saturday afternoon

BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- For the first time since last season's Patriot League Championship game, the Lehigh women's basketball team will meet defending champ American Saturday afternoon inside Stabler Arena. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. and the game will be broadcast live locally on Service Electric 2 Sports and online for free via the Patriot League Network.
The Mountain Hawks will be looking for their third-straight win and fourth victory in the last five contests Saturday. Lehigh is 9-5 overall, 2-1 in Patriot League play and coming off a 66-48 win over Loyola Wednesday evening. The Mountain Hawks broke a 30-30 tie early in the second half with a 13-1 run and never looked back as Lehigh handed the Greyhounds their first Patriot League loss of the season. The Mountain Hawks finished the game shooting 43.4 percent (23-for-53) from the field, 23.5 percent (4-for-17) from three-point range and 80 percent (16-for-20) from the free-throw line. Lehigh held Loyola to stingy clips of 27.6 percent (16-for-58) from the field, 16.7 percent (3-for-18) from downtown and 65.0 percent (13-for-20) from the charity stripe.
Junior Lexi Martins led the Mountain Hawks with 17 points and 18 rebounds as she recorded her 11th double-double of the season. Senior Kerry Kinek notched her fourth double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds and shot an impressive 8-for-10 from the field. Sophomore Quinci Mann contributed 10 points and a team-best three assists. Senior Elizabeth Sharlow also had a strong game with nine points, seven rebounds and two assists.
For the season, Martins leads the Mountain Hawks with 14.9 points per game and 14.6 rebound per contest, a mark that leads the league and ranks second in the nation. Kinek follows with 13.3 points per game, while Mann has chipped in 13.2.
Defending champion American carries a 3-11 overall record and 1-2 mark in Patriot League play into Saturday's contest. American opened league play with a 52-46 loss at Loyola before claiming a 49-37 win at Colgate. The Eagles fell 66-60 to first-place Bucknell Wednesday in the team's most recent action. American held a 49-44 at the beginning of the fourth quarter, but Bucknell answered with a 13-4 run to pull ahead for good. The Eagles committed six of their 14 turnovers in the final period, while Bucknell shot 80 percent from the field in the quarter, including 3-of-4 from beyond the arc, to seal the win.
Sophomore Emily Kinneston finished with 15 points and four assists to lead American, while freshman Cecily Carl added 12 points. Also scoring in double figures for the Eagles was sophomore Maria Liddane, who recorded 11 points and a team-high five assists and five steals.
Michelle Holmes leads American with 9.7 points and 7.9 rebounds per game, but hasn't seen action in Patriot League play. Lauren Crisler follows with 9.6 points and 5.9 boards per contest, while Kineeston has chipped in 7.2 points per game.
Lehigh will be looking to snap a five-game losing streak to American and avenge last year's Patriot League Championship game loss to the Eagles Saturday afternoon. The Eagles have swept the last two regular-season series and earned the 2014-15 league title with a 66-50 win in the championship contest in Washington, D.C.
The Mountain Hawks ended the first half of the championship game on a 17-6 run to pull even, but top-seeded American pulled away in the second half to capture the team's first league crown in program history. Martins finished with eight points and 14 rebounds, eclipsing the Lehigh single-season rebound record in the process. Her sixth of the game gave her 336 for the season, besting the previous record of 335 that was set in 2001 by former standout Anne Tierney. Kinek tallied double-figure points with 12 on 5-of-9 shooting and 2-of-3 from three-point range, while Sharlow scored eight.
For the game, Lehigh shot 36.5 percent (19-of-52) from the field, 53.8 percent (7-of-13) from three-point range and 62.5 percent (5-of-8) from the free throw line. The Mountain Hawks held a dominant 40-30 edge in rebounds. Lehigh had 19 turnovers compared to just six for American which led to a 20-0 Eagles' edge in points off turnovers.
