BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Lehigh men's basketball team will look to bounce back from a tough last-second loss at Loyola Wednesday when the Mountain Hawks head to American on Saturday to face the Eagles. Lehigh held an 11-point halftime lead over the Greyhounds Wednesday, but struggled offensively in the second half and a contested Andre Walker layup gave Loyola the victory. Saturday's tipoff at American is set for 2 p.m. and will air regionally on Comcast Mid-Atlantic, along with the Patriot League Network.
The Mountain Hawks closed the first half by outscoring the Greyhounds 22-7 over the final 11:25 to take a 29-18 lead at the half. Loyola quickly got back into the game in the second half, eventually evening the score at 35 with 12:01 on the clock. Trailing by five with 5:23 remaining, Lehigh responded as a Kahron Ross three-pointer tied the score at 48 with 2:14 to go. A driving Austin Price layup gave the Mountain Hawks a 50-49 advantage with 50 seconds remaining, but a Walker layup with 4.5 seconds on the clock was the difference.
Lehigh struggled from the free throw line, especially in the second half, knocking down just 6-of-15 (40 percent) from the charity stripe. The Mountain Hawks also shot just 28 percent from the field (7-of-25) over the final 20 minutes.
Junior Tim Kempton posted his second straight double-double and the 24th of his career, finishing with 10 points and 13 rebounds. Freshman Kyle Leufroy also scored 10 points (eight in the first half) while senior Jesse Chuku had nine points, 11 boards and two blocks. Ross and Price tallied eight points apiece. Lehigh's defense impressed and kept the Mountain Hawks in the game, forcing Loyola to shoot just 32 percent for the game, including 23 percent in the first half. There were only 16 combined turnovers in the game, nine from Lehigh and seven from Loyola.
Saturday features a rematch of last season's Patriot League Quarterfinal matchup, which American won, 68-62. Last season featured three extremely competitive games as American won the first contest, 62-59 on a last-second three-pointer, Lehigh responded with a 65-58 victory before the postseason contest. The Eagles have made two straight league championship games, but are struggling this season.
After two straight Patriot League Championship Game appearances, American features a very young, and new, squad. The Eagles enter the weekend with a 2-12 record and 0-3 mark in league play. Two-time All-Patriot League honoree Jesse Reed leads the team offensively with a team-leading 11.9 points and 4.0 rebounds per game. George Washington transfer Paris Maragkos is second on the Eagles with 9.4 points per game, Delante Jones averages 8.4 and James Washington 7.2. American's wins this season have come at New Hampshire (68-50) and at Youngstown State (60-56). So far in league play, the Eagles have dropped games at Loyola (75-67), home vs. Colgate (56-37) and at Bucknell (72-54).
American has won four of the last five meetings after a stretch which saw the Mountain Hawks win four-of-five themselves. The Eagles hold a 26-19 edge overall. The two sides have played multiple times in the Patriot League Tournament, including each of Lehigh's three Patriot League Championship campaigns. Lehigh's last win at American came on Jan. 16, 2013 by a 63-57 final.
The Mountain Hawks return home next Monday to host Bucknell at 7:30 p.m. on CBS Sports Network.
