BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Six home duals and five matchups with top ten finishers from last year's NCAA Championships highlight the 2015-16 Lehigh wrestling schedule announced Friday by head coach Pat Santoro. The Mountain Hawks will return to the
Southern Scuffle for the second straight year and will head back to the Northeast Duals after a one year hiatus.
Â
Lehigh will conclude the 2015-16 at the NCAA Championships in New York's Madison Square Garden, marking the return of the NCAA Championships to an eastern city for the first time since Philadelphia hosted in 2011.
Â
"For the first time in a long time we're not what you'd call a young team, but we'll have some young guys," Santoro said. "We're excited about the challenges that lie ahead. We tried to put together the most competitive schedule we could get. All of this is preparation for next March."
Â
The Mountain Hawks will kick-off their 107th season of wrestling with the annual Brown and White wrestle-offs, October 29 at Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall. Lehigh will open the regular season on the road with a November 6 dual at Bucknell and will follow that up by sending a contingent to the Jonathan Kaloust Bearcat Open hosted by Binghamton on November 8.
Â
The following weekend, Lehigh returns to the Journeymen/Asics Northeast Duals in Troy, N.Y. The Mountain Hawks will face a pair of tough tests in Big Ten members Minnesota and Nebraska as the Northeast Duals move to November 15 from their traditional Saturday-after-Thanksgiving date.
Â
"We have the tournament the week before so we didn't want to do three duals," Santoro said. "We wanted to have some good competition there and in Minnesota and Nebraska there are two great teams. I like competing against teams that wrestle aggressively because that's what we're aiming for with our program. It's another opportunity for our guys to go out there and compete against some of the best teams in the country."
Â
Lehigh will make its home debut with a pair of duals surrounding the annual Lehigh-Lafayette football game, set for Goodman Stadium on November 21. The Mountain Hawks will open their home schedule when Pittsburgh visits Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall on Friday November 20 as Santoro once again squares off against his alma mater. On Sunday November 22, the Fighting Scots of Edinboro come to town on the heels of a third place finish at last year's NCAA Championships.
Â
The Mountain Hawks will be off from competition Thanksgiving weekend and will return to the mats with two duals in New Jersey on Saturday December 5. Lehigh will begin the day with a dual at Rider, looking to avenge a loss on criteria last season before heading to Princeton to face Chris Ayres' Tigers in what will be the Mountain Hawks' first dual at Princeton since January 2003.
Â
After a break for final exams, Lehigh will close out the 2015 portion of its schedule with a December 20 dual at Oklahoma.
Â
For the second straight year, the Mountain Hawks will ring in the new year at the Southern Scuffle, January 1-2 in Chattanooga, Tenn. Lehigh finished seventh last season in one of the nation's top in-season tournaments.
Â
After the Southern Scuffle, Lehigh's next five duals will be against EIWA opposition. The Mountain Hawks will return home to face longtime EIWA rival Navy on Saturday January 9 before making the short trek down to Penn the following day.
Â
The next two weekends feature a January 16 dual at Franklin & Marshall and a January 23 tilt at EIWA rival Cornell.
Â
Lehigh will wrestle its first three duals in February at home, starting with a February 6 matchup with American at Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall.
Â
The Mountain Hawks' most-often wrestled rival is Penn State, with dual 104 in the longtime series slated for Stabler Arena on February 12. Lehigh will be looking for its first win over its arch rival since the 2009-10 season. Two days later, the Mountain Hawks will close out their home schedule against Bloomsburg back in Grace Hall.
Â
Santoro commented on some of the highlights of the home schedule, "Edinboro wasn't a surprise to me (last year). Tim Flynn is one of the best coaches in the country. Joel Sharratt is doing great things at Navy. I love the way Penn State wrestles and that's a team you obviously want to wrestle every year, so we're really excited about the opportunity to compete against those teams."
Â
Lehigh's destination for the final weekend of the dual season is still to be determined. The Mountain Hawks could compete in the new incarnation of the NWCA National Duals, with details still to be finalized. If Lehigh does not participate at National Duals, the Mountain Hawks will visit Harvard for a single dual on February 20.
Â
Princeton will host the EIWA Championships, March 5-6 at Jadwin Gym in New Jersey. The Mountain Hawks' NCAA qualifiers will move on to the NCAA Championships, March 17-19 at Madison Square Garden in New York.
Â
Season ticket renewals have been sent out, with new season tickets going on sale September 1. Single match tickets are slated to go on sale September 8. For wrestling ticket information, please visit LehighTickets.com.
Â
The Mountain Hawks posted a 14-6 dual record in 2014-15 and finished second at the EIWA Championships and 13th at the NCAA Championships. Lehigh crowned three All-Americans at last year's NCAA Championships and returns four All-Americans total among its 11 returning wrestlers who have previously qualified for the NCAA Championships.
