BETHLEHEM, Pa. – On the heels of the program's 13th Patriot League Tournament title, Lehigh head coach Fran Troyan has announced the addition of four student-athletes who will join the Mountain Hawks softball program in the fall. Three of the four members of the class of 2019 hail from the west coast while the fourth comes to Lehigh from New Jersey. The incoming class features a pitcher, a catcher, an outfielder and an outfielder/first baseman.
"This year's freshman class has big shoes to fill," said Troyan, who begins his 21st season. "We graduated a class that had four outstanding players, students and individuals. We feel like this particular class coming in has a lot of potential to have tremendous careers here at Lehigh as well."
Lehigh posted a 40-9 campaign in 2015, capturing its first Patriot League title in three years and returning to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2012. The Mountain Hawks lose two-time Patriot League Pitcher of the Year and 2015 Patriot League Tournament MVP Emily Bausher to graduation but Lehigh returns a wealth of talent including two-time Patriot League Player of the Year Morgan Decker, Alexis Watanabe, who ranked ninth in the NCAA in batting average last season, and reigning Patriot League Rookie of the Year Nicole Yozzo. More information on the newcomers can be found below.
Brianna Gerhardt • C/UT • Petaluma, Calif. • Business
Catcher Brianna Gerhardt is a versatile performer who also played some shortstop for her high school team. She comes to Lehigh from Petaluma High School in California, where she was a three-time all-league selection and a three-time All-Empire pick. Gerhardt was recognized as her team's Offensive Player of the Year as a sophomore and a senior and was named Defensive Player of the Year as a junior. In her senior season Gerhardt batted .500 in 28 games with 45 hits, 30 RBI and 49 runs scored.
Troyan on Gerhardt: "Bri is a catcher from Petaluma and also played shortstop in high school. She's an incredibly versatile player with strong athletic ability. We will look to utilize her in a variety of ways when she gets here."
Ashley Quidolit • OF • Bonita, Calif. • Arts and Sciences
Speedy outfielder Ashley Quidolit comes to Lehigh from Bonita Vista High School near San Diego, the same school that produced rising sophomore Carolyn Wright. Quidolit was the Bonita Vista Athlete of the Year in 2015 and earned first team all-league and second team All-CIF honors. She plays her travel softball for the California Cruisers.
Troyan on Quidolit: "Ashley went to the same high school as Carolyn Wright so we've had a lot of connections to her. As a player, Ashley is very comparable to Nicole Yozzo and will add even more speed to our program. We feel like she is going to be an exciting player to watch."
Emily Sorem • P • Portland, Ore. • Arts and Sciences
Portland, Oregon native Emily Sorem brings a strong resume to the pitcher's circle for the Mountain Hawks. Sorem owns a 73-11 career high school record and struck out 953 batters in 542.2 innings of work. The Gatorade Player of the Year in Oregon, Sorem garnered first team All-America accolades from Max Preps and Full Count Softball and honorable mention honors from USA Today. She is a four-time all-league selection and a three-time all-state selection. As a senior, Sorem was named Oregon Pitcher of the Year and the state Player of the Year by the Oregonian. She plays her travel softball for the Northwest Bullets.
Troyan on Sorem: "Emily has a significant softball pedigree being the Gatorade Player of the Year from the state of Oregon, winning a state championship. Recently her team won the Triple Crown Sports tournament out in Nevada. We feel like she has the talent to be able to come in and compete right away for us. We're not going to expect her to replace Emily Bausher right away but we feel like she has the ability to come in and do some great things."
Jennifer Stoll • 1B/OF • Wanaque, N.J. • Business
First baseman/outfielder Jennifer Stoll represents the east coast in the incoming class. Stoll earned a total of 12 varsity letters across softball, basketball and volleyball for Lakeland Regional High School in New Jersey. On the softball diamond, Stoll was a four-time first team all-conference performer who earned second team all-state honors as a senior. Stoll was named her high school and county's Athlete of the Year. She hit .542 over her career and set a school record with 154 career hits.
Troyan on Stoll: "Jen is a three sport athlete from New Jersey that we've been able to follow for a long time. She has incredible versatility and will be able to play first base and the outfield for us. We feel like she is the type of athlete that will be able to make an impact in our program."
