BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Hofstra's Caryn Bailey hit a two-out grand slam, her second home run of the game, to lift the visiting Pride to a come-from-behind 5-4 win over the Lehigh softball team in the first game of a doubleheader Wednesday at Kaufman Field. The loss snapped Lehigh's school and Patriot League record 15 game winning streak.
The Mountain Hawks also dropped the nightcap 4-0 as Lehigh dropped back to back games for the first time this season and was shut out for the first time in 2015.
Freshman Nicole Yozzo and junior Alexis Watanabe combined to go 7-for-12 at the plate and combined for half of Lehigh's hits on the day as the Mountain Hawks fall to 24-5 on the season. Hofstra improves to 19-9-1 with the doubleheader sweep.
In game one Lehigh took a 1-0 lead after three innings as Watanabe singled home senior Emma Capetz who led off with a double.
Hofstra evened the score in the top of the fourth on a solo home run by Bailey, but Lehigh answered with a run in the bottom of the frame when senior Cassie Waggy's fly ball to center fell in and junior Jessica Calvini scored from third after doubling to lead off the inning.
The Mountain Hawks added to their lead in the fifth as Yozzo led off with an infield single, stole second, and then scored on a double to right by sophomore Vicky Lattanzio.
Lehigh took a 3-1 lead into the seventh and senior Emily Bausher retired the first two batters she faced. With Hofstra down to its last strike, Christie Sinacori walked on a very close 3-2 pitch. The Pride followed with back-to-back singles to load the bases before Bailey hit her seventh home run and third grand slam of the season over the left centerfield fence.
Trailing 5-3, Lehigh tried to rally in the bottom of the seventh. Yozzo led off with an infield single and Watanabe replaced her on first following a fielder's choice. Lattanzio drew a two-out walk to put runners at first and second as the Pride brought in Taylor Pirone in relief of starting pitcher Morgan Lashley.
Calvini hit a ground ball to the left side with Pride first baseman Brittany Allocca unable to come up with the throw, which went down the right field line. Watanabe scored from second to make the score 5-4 but pinch runner Rachel Timberman was thrown out at the plate to end the game attempting to score the tying run.
Bausher took the loss in game one, allowing five runs on eight hits. She struck out seven and walked two as she falls to 12-3. Lashley earned the win for Hofstra while Pirone recorded a save.
Game two saw Hofstra score single runs in the first, third, fourth and seven innings against sophomore Christine Campbell, two of which were unearned. Megan Patierno drove in a run with a third inning RBI double while Brielle Pietrafesa capped the scoring with a RBI single in the seventh.
Pirone limited Lehigh to six hits, with Watanabe going 2-for-2 at the plate. Campbell allowed four runs (two earned) on seven hits, while striking out two and walking seven in her first loss since Lehigh's second game of the season (10-2). Hofstra left 14 runners on base.
The Mountain Hawks will look to get back on track when they head to Holy Cross for a three-game weekend series. Lehigh and Holy Cross will play a doubleheader Saturday at noon in Worcester, Mass., followed by a single game Sunday at noon.
