BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh softball team will look to build on its early season Patriot League success when the Mountain Hawks travel to Worcester, Mass. to take on Holy Cross in a three-game series.
The series will mark the first three games of a five game road trip and a stretch of seven of eight games away from home for the Mountain Hawks, who saw their record 15 game winning streak come to an end when they were swept by Hofstra in a doubleheader Wednesday at Kaufman Field.
Senior pitcher Emily Bausher took a heartbreaking loss in game one against a strong Hofstra squad, allowing five runs on eight hits. She struck out seven and walked two as she fell to 12-3 on the year. Lehigh took a 3-1 lead into the seventh inning and Bausher retired the first two batters she faced. With Hofstra down to its last strike, Christie Sinacori walked on a very close 3-2 pitch. The Pride followed with back-to-back singles to load the bases before Caryn Bailey hit her seventh home run and third grand slam of the season to give the Pride the lead. The Mountain Hawks tried to rally in the bottom of the seventh but had the tying run thrown out at the plate to end the game in a 5-4 setback. Hofstra took game two 4-0.
Lehigh enters this weekend at a mark of 24-5 and are 8-0 in Patriot League play. The Mountain Hawks have gotten strong pitching from Bausher, a five-time Patriot League Pitcher of the Week this season, and sophomore Christine Campbell. The duo sits atop the Patriot League rankings in terms of ERA. Campbell leads the league with a 1.58 ERA while Bausher is right behind at 1.63.
In eight league games, Lehigh has outscored its opposition 70-10. Six of the Mountain Hawks' league wins have come via the eight run rule. Bausher and Campbell have yielded just seven earned runs in league play.
Offensively, junior Alexis Watanabe leads Lehigh with a .515 average. She has scored 16 runs and driven in 15 in 22 games. In league play, Watanabe is 14-for-22 (.636) with ten runs scored and ten RBI. She is the reigning Patriot League Player of the Week.
Juniors Jessica Calvini and MacKenzie Velasquez also have ten RBI in league play. Calvini leads the team in overall ERA with 22.
Weather issues have limited Holy Cross to just 11 games this season. Holy Cross currently sports a 3-8 record but is coming off an important series victory against Boston University last weekend. The Crusaders were able to take the rubber match 8-4 after splitting the first two games. Holy Cross is 2-4 in the league after dropping all three games of its league-opening series at Army.
The Crusaders will rely on junior Emily Jarvis and Freshman Taylor Moss to pace their offense. Jarvis has started eight games and is batting an impressive .500 with one home run and five RBIs. In eleven games started, Moss has compiled a team-leading 18 hits and a .474 batting average. Senior Tori Cheske has been strong in the circle this season. In 19 innings of relief, she owns a team-best 2.58 ERA with 13 strikeouts. Holy Cross has used five pitchers this season with Gennifer Durham making seven starts and Katy Watson making four.
Last season, Lehigh swept three games from the Crusaders to improve its all-time record to 77-17 against Holy Cross.
The Mountain Hawks and Crusaders will play a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at noon and then will close out the series on Sunday with a single game at noon.
Lehigh will then visit Princeton for a non-league doubleheader Wednesday before hosting Boston University in a single game on Friday April 17.
