EASTON, Pa. – The Lehigh men's track and field team won 12 of 19 events to earn a 115-88 victory over Lafayette Monday at the Metzgar Athletic Complex in the annual Lehigh-Lafayette dual meet. With the win, the Mountain Hawks complete the season sweep of the Leopards after earning a 120-61 victory in the indoor dual meet in February.
"The men did a lot of what we expected today and I was happy with a lot of their performances," said head coach Matt Utesch. "I like the direction they're moving in and thought a lot of our seniors did a great job today."
Senior Benjamin Beauchamp earned a pair of titles with IC4A-qualifying marks in both the discus (50.34 meters) and hammer throws (55.68 meters).
"Ben is such a great kid and a super hard worker and he's done all the right things for four years," said Utesch. "He's proving that our throwing coach's system works. He's so mature in that he's adapted and had great improvement all season long."
Sophomore Daniel Boardman claimed the long jump with an IC4A-qualifying mark of 7.20 meters.
Freshman Trevor Knowles continued his strong rookie campaign with a first-place pole vault mark of 4.55 meters. Sophomore Daniel Reichenbach claimed another Lehigh victory in the triple jump with a leap of 14.05 meters.
Lehigh took the top three spots in four separate track events. Senior Justin Mahoney led the way in the 400 meter dash with a time of 49.09 seconds, while classmate Christopher Watson claimed the 800 meter title with a clip of 1:55.38. Senior Simon Voorhees grabbed the top spot on the 1,500 meter podium with a time of 4:00.83, while classmate Ryan Mahalsky ran 5,000 meters in 14:42.76 to finish first. Senior Robert Hugin claimed the 400 meter hurdles title with a clip of 56.58.
The 4x100 meter relay team of Mahoney, sophomore Christopher Del Rossi, senior Julian Copeland and freshman Jake Sabatini outkicked Lafayette by nine seconds to earn first place with a time of 43.68 seconds.
The quartett of Watson, sophomore Tom Troxell, sophomore James Clements and senior Sebastian Nicewicz then followed with a victory in the 4x400 meter relay after finishing with a time of 3:25.60.
Lehigh will split its squad between three meets this weekend as the Mountain Hawks travel to Moravian, Bucknell and George Mason.
