Lehigh falls 5-1 in midweek game against Delaware

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh baseball team wasn't able to get much going offensively in a non-league game Tuesday against Delaware at Legacy Park as the Blue Hens captured a 5-1 victory.
"I didn't think we came out with the same energy that we did this weekend," said head coach Sean Leary. "We certainly competed, but we didn't play with urgency the whole game so it kind of snuck up on us. These guys will compete and we'll be ready to go again tomorrow."
Senior John Elson led Lehigh with a 2-for-4 showing at the plate that included a triple and run scored.
After a scoreless first two innings, the Blue Hens put the game's first run on the board in the third when Ty Warrington sent a leadoff double down the left field line before crossing the plate on an RBI single from Joe Giacchino.
Lehigh freshman starter John Fitz kept the Blue Hens off the board in the fourth, but a two-run home run helped Delaware put together a three-run fifth inning to grab a 4-0 lead.
Delaware starter Kevin Milley limited Lehigh to three hits until the seventh inning when Elson smoked a one-out triple to center field. Following a walk, sophomore John Scarr sent a hard grounder to first base that Delaware wasn't able to handle as Elson came home on the error to put Lehigh on the board.
Freshman Michael Schwab came in to fire 4.1 innings and limited the Blue Hens to just one unearned run in the eighth inning. Lehigh wasn't able to get anything else off Milley or two Blue Hen relievers as Delaware walked away with the 5-1 win.
Lehigh continues its six-game homestand Wednesday with a 3 p.m. contest against Coppin State at Legacy Park. Free video will be available on the Patriot League Network.
