Lehigh field hockey recognized by NFHCA for academic success

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Enjoying continued success in the classroom, nine Lehigh field hockey student-athletes have been named to the NFHCA Division I National Academic Squad, as recently announced. In addition, freshman Julia Washburn was named a Scholar of Distinction for earning a GPA of 3.9 or higher during the fall semester. The Mountain Hawks as a team logged a GPA over 3.0 this fall which earned them an NFHCA National Academic Team Award.

The nine members of the National Academic Squad were recognized for achieving a GPA of 3.3 or higher during the fall. Five freshmen were honored: Alex Lange, Katie Morris, Jackie Renda, Julia Washburn and Laura Yuh. Sophomore Kassidy Green was also named to the squad along with juniors Erin Ricker and Taylor Mygatt. Senior Steph Fratoni, a four-year member of the National Academic Squad, rounded out the group.

Washburn was also recognized as a Scholar of Distinction by the NFHCA, thanks to her fall GPA of 3.92. She is the first Mountain Hawk to be named a Scholar of Distinction since Katherine Koomar two years ago. On the field, Washburn played in seven games and notched one shot on goal during her first collegiate season.

As a team, the Mountain Hawks logged a GPA over 3.0, which made them eligible for the Division I National Academic Team Award. Success in the classroom has become a recurring theme for the field hockey program, as 15 student-athletes were named to the 2014 Patriot League Academic Honor Roll announced last month.

After an up-and-down season, the Mountain Hawks return many contributors in 2015, including leading goal-scorers in juniors Gabby Tofig and Lindsey Schott, along with sophomore and two-year starting goalkeeper Julia Ward.
