BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Coming off a tough loss to Lafayette Sunday, the Lehigh men's basketball team remains home for its final regular season game in Stabler Arena when the Mountain Hawks welcome first-place Bucknell on Wednesday. Opening tipoff is set for 7 p.m. With two regular season games remaining, the Mountain Hawks are in sole possession of third place, but could move up to second place, or fall a few spots. Lehigh is one game ahead of Lafayette and Boston University who are tied for fourth and two games ahead of Navy, American and Loyola who are tied for sixth. A win over Bucknell on Wednesday would clinch a top-four seed and home game in the Patriot League Quarterfinals.
Many events surround Wednesday's game as Lehigh's Pride Center and Lehigh Athletics are co-hosting an LGBTQ Equality Game. The event is intended to provide a means for athletes, coaches and fans to stand up and create an atmosphere of inclusion at Lehigh, recognize the courage and openness of athletes at all levels who have come out as LGBTQ and honor the teammates, coaches, friends and families who support them. Fresh off an outstanding halftime show during Lehigh's home game vs. American on Feb. 12, the Bungee Jumpers will return on Wednesday for another halftime performance. Lehigh students can ride the Goodman Bus, which will run at 6:15 and 6:45 p.m. on Wednesday, leaving from the Dialogue Center on Taylor Street (between Taylor Gym and Grace Hall).
Lehigh got off to a slow start against Lafayette Sunday, but ended the first half on a 10-5 run and began the second half on a 13-1 run to take a 40-33 lead after a three-pointer from senior Corey Schaefer. Schaefer was one of four Mountain Hawks who started their Senior Day Game. The Leopards had an immediate response and eventually took an eight-point advantage late in the second half, but Lehigh staged an 8-0 run to tie the score. Neither team led by more than two the rest of the way and a Nick Lindner jumper with 1:37 remaining gave the Leopards a 63-61 lead, which proved to be the final.
Four different Mountain Hawks tallied double-figure points, including 13 each from freshman Kahron Ross and sophomore Tim Kempton. Kempton added 10 rebounds for his 12th double-double of the season (and 18th of his career). Sophomore Austin Price also added 12 points and a career-high tying six rebounds while junior Justin Goldsborough just missed a double-double, finishing with 11 points on 5-of-8 shooting and nine boards.
The defeat snapped a five-game home winning streak as the Mountain Hawks' last loss in Stabler Arena was Jan. 10 vs. Loyola. Lehigh has already split the season series with four teams (American, Boston University, Holy Cross and Lafayette) with hopes of wins and season splits this week against Bucknell and Colgate. Sunday's game against Lafayette was broadcast live nation-wide on CBS Sports Network, Lehigh's second game on the network in a 10-day span. The Mountain Hawks' regular season finale at Colgate on Saturday will also be broadcast on the CBS Sports Network.
Bucknell has won the last two games to take a 100-63 lead in the all-time series. This came after a stretch when the Mountain Hawks won four-of-five. Lehigh won the last home game vs. Bucknell, 66-63 last season. The series has been extremely close as of late with each of the last nine games being decided by seven points or less. The teams have a storied history playing in the postseason as Lehigh won the 2012 Patriot League Championship Game at Bucknell, 82-77, one year after the Bison eliminated the Mountain Hawks in the league semifinals, 66-64. Bucknell is Lehigh's second most-played rival all-time, only behind Lafayette
Bucknell finished 5-8 in nonleague play, but has gone 12-4 in the Patriot League. The Bison enter Wednesday's game winners of five straight and 10 of their last 12 games. Chris Hass leads the team and is fourth in the league in scoring (16.0). Freshman Nana Foulland is second with 9.8 points and a team-leading 5.4 boards per game while J.C. Show averages 6.7 points and Zach Thomas 6.5. The Bison are in the middle of the league in both offense (fifth) and defense (sixth). They are now second (to Lehigh) in field goal percentage defense (.435) and second in three-point field goal percentage (.396).
Lehigh will wrap up the regular season on Saturday at Colgate. Tipoff is set for 12 p.m. on CBS Sports Network.
