Mountain Hawks host Holy Cross in Play 4Kay game Saturday

BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- The Lehigh women's basketball team hosts Holy Cross in a key Patriot League matchup Saturday at 2 p.m. Â inside Stabler Arena on Play 4Kay day. Fans who wear pink will receive free admission to the game and Lehigh Gas will be donating $1 per every fan in attendance to local women's cancer programs.

The Play 4Kay initiative is an opportunity for a nation of coaches to raise funds, support and awareness for the prevention of female cancers. Since its inception in 2007, the Play 4Kay initiative has raised over $2.5 million to support women's cancer research. The Kay Yow Cancer Fund is the official charity of the initiative and was founded from the vision of the organization's namesake Kay Yow, former North Carolina State women's basketball coach. Yow was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 1987 and passed away in 2009, after facing her third bout with the disease.

Lehigh looks to bounce back from a tough 74-64 road loss at first-place American on Wednesday night. The Mountain Hawks led by as much as 11 early on in the first half, but American quickly chipped away at the Lehigh lead and shot 53.1 percent from the field in the second half en route to the victory.

Senior Katie O'Reilly led Lehigh with 16 points, followed by classmate Sarah Williams with 12 points and junior Kerry Kinek with ten points and eight rebounds. The Mountain Hawks finished the game shooting 39.3 percent (24-for-61) from the field, 29.4 percent (5-for-17) from downtown and 78.6 percent (11-for-14) from the free throw line. American won the battle of the boards, 37-33.

Holy Cross enters Saturday's contest in a three-way tie for fourth place in the Patriot League and just one game back from third-place Lehigh. The Crusaders hold a 11-15 overall mark and 7-6 Patriot League record.

The Crusaders were on a three-game winning streak until dropping a close 53-51 contest against Army on Wednesday night in Worcester. Holy Cross held a 42-39 lead with 11:38 left in the second half, but Army went on an 11-4 spurt to gain the 50-46 advantage at the 2:31-mark of the second half. The league's leading scorer Kelsey Minato scored seven of the 11 points for the Black Knights during the stretch, as Holy Cross would not be able to retake the lead for the remainder of the contest.

Holy Cross was led by junior forward Raquel Scott, who tallied a team-high 16 points to go along with four rebounds. Junior guard Lisa Mifsud posted 12 points, while junior center Molly Hourigan hauled in a team-best five rebounds. Freshman guard Infiniti Thomas-Waheed recorded seven points and a game-high six assists.

Scott leads the team, and ranks second in the league with 17.7 points and 9.4 rebounds per game.

The Mountain Hawks will be looking to complete the season sweep of the Crusaders after winning the season's first contest 66-60 in Worcester, Mass. on Jan. 17. Lehigh trailed by nine at Holy Cross with 15:44 to play, but was slowly able to chip away at the Crusader lead and come back to pick up a 66-60 victory. Lehigh held Holy Cross to just two points in the final three minutes and converted 9-of-10 attempts from the charity stripe to seal the road victory.

O'Reilly led the team with a career-high 22 points to go along with eight rebounds and three steals. Sophomore Lexi Martins tallied her 11th double-double of the season with 13 points and 12 rebounds, while freshman Quinci Mann followed with seven points.

The Mountain Hawks shot 33.9 percent (20-for-59) from the field, 16.7 percent (3-for-18) from three-point range and 59 percent (23-for-59) from the free throw line. Holy Cross went 32.2 percent (19-for-59) from the field, 25 percent (3-for-12) from downtown and 79.2 percent (19-for-24) from the charity stripe. Lehigh held a 47-38 rebound advantage.
