BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Fresh off a 65-58 win over defending Patriot League Champion American, the Lehigh men's basketball team hits the road for Worcester, Massachusetts to face the Holy Cross Crusaders on Saturday at 3 p.m. The Mountain Hawks have won seven of their last eight games overall to move into third place in the league standings, a full two games ahead of four times tied for fourth.
Â
It will be a quick turnaround for the Mountain Hawks, who hop on a bus on Friday and play less than 48 hours after their win over American. It isn't unchartered territory, however, as Lehigh played at Quinnipiac on a Thursday night in December then flew to Phoenix on Friday. The Mountain Hawks came out a day later and defeated Arizona State out of the Pac-12 in triple overtime, a Sun Devils' team that defeated #6 Arizona at home last Saturday.
Â
Lehigh has now won five straight home games, reaching a double-figure advantage in each of those contests. The Mountain Hawks' four-game win streak overall ties a season high. On Thursday, Lehigh ended the first half on a 25-3 lead run over the final 14:15 to take a 33-19 lead after 20 minutes of play. Lehigh held American scoreless over the final 7:36 as the Eagles shot just 28 percent (7-of-25) in the first half. The Eagles tried to come back in the second half, but couldn't pull any closer than six. Lehigh was a perfect 10-of-10 from the free throw line over the final minute, six from freshman Kahron Ross and four from sophomore Austin Price, to ice the victory.
Â
Sophomore Tim Kempton led the team in scoring, tallying 20 points on 7-of-10 shooting and 6-of-7 from the free throw line. He added two blocks as the Mountain Hawks posted seven blocks for the game. Junior Justin Goldsborough had three while sophomore Miles Simelton and junior Jesse Chuku each had one. Price also enjoyed a strong game, scoring 15 points on 3-of-5 from three-point range and 6-of-6 from the free throw line. Both Price and Simelton grabbed six rebounds to either tie, or set, new career highs. Chuku also had seven boards. Ross finished with 10 points and five assists (against just one turnover). All eight Mountain Hawks who played, dished an assist. Lehigh has now assisted on 82 of its 108 field goals over the last four games.
Â
Lehigh stands just one game behind both Bucknell and Colgate who are tied for first place with 9-4 league records. Behind the Mountain Hawks in the standings is Loyola, American, Boston University and Lafayette, all with 6-7 league marks. Holy Cross, Navy and Army are all tied for eighth place with their 5-8 records. The Crusaders are in the midst of an up-and-down season, but is coming off a big road win at Army Wednesday.
Â
Holy Cross enters the weekend with a 10-13 record and 5-8 mark in the Patriot League. After a big 58-57 win over Harvard to open the season, the Crusaders were up-and-down in nonleague action, finishing 5-5. Holy Cross began league play 0-3 and 1-5, but has won four of its last seven games, defeating Lafayette, Navy, Colgate and Army. Malcolm Miller leads the team in scoring (12.8) and is tied for the team high in rebounds (4.7). Malachi Alexander has also grabbed 4.7 boards per game while Justin Burrell averages 10.3 points and a team-leading 4.0 assists per contest.
Â
Holy Cross owns a 38-18 lead in the all-time series, but the Mountain Hawks have won four of the last seven meetings. Lehigh won three straight from 2012-13 then the Crusaders won the next three before the Mountain Hawks' 69-64 win last month. Lehigh's last game at the Hart Center was a 54-48 Patriot League Quarterfinal loss last season. The Mountain Hawks have struggled at Holy Cross all-time, winning just twice in their last 21 games at the Hart Center. The teams first met in 1976, an 84-60 Holy Cross victory, before reconvening for Patriot League play in the early 1990s.
Â
Following Saturday's game, the Mountain Hawks head to Navy next Wednesday before returning home to host archrival Lafayette on Sunday, Feb. 22 in a nationally-televised CBS Sports Network game.
