
Lehigh heads to Illinois for Sunday tilt

BETHLEHEM, Pa. --The Lehigh women's basketball team hits the road for the first contest of a five-game road swing Sunday when the Mountain Hawks travel to Illinois. Tipoff from the State Farm Center is slated for 3 p.m. ET/2 p.m. CT and free audio will be available on 91.3 WLVR FM.
Lehigh will be looking to snap a two-game losing streak after starting the season 6-0. The Mountain Hawks lost a heartbreaker Wednesday against Saint Joseph's as the Hawks came out on top 63-62. Lehigh trailed by 11 midway through the fourth quarter, but rallied to take a one-point lead with 52 seconds to play. A conventional three-point play from Saint Joseph's Ciara Andrews put the Hawks ahead by one with eight seconds left before Lehigh missed a last-second jumper that would have won the game.
Sophomore Quinci Mann sparked Lehigh's comeback with 14 fourth-quarter points. Mann finished the contest with a game-high 20 points. Junior Lexi Martins tallied her seventh double-double of the season with 11 points and 12 rebounds in addition to a team-best four assists. Junior Kayla Burton provided a big spark in the opening half with nine first-half points. The Mountain Hawks finished the game shooting 36.2 percent (21-for-58) from the field, 30.8 percent (4-for-13) from three-point range and 64 percent (16-for-25) from the free throw line.
Martins leads the team with 17.1 points per game this season in addition to her 15.3 rebounds per game that sits tied for first in all of Division I. Her seven double-doubles are more than any other DI player. The Mountain Hawks have outscored their opponents by an average of 17.0 points per game so far this season and also hold a +10.8 rebounding margin.
Illinois carries a 4-1 record into Sunday's contest and is coming off its first loss of the season as the Illini dropped a 73-64 road game at Miami Wednesday evening. Illinois is 4-0 at home, but has played all four of its home games at Parkland College due to home court renovations. Sunday's game against Lehigh will mark the first time this season that the Illini will be playing in the State Farm Center.
Illinois controlled a 35-28 halftime lead at Miami Wednesday, but the Hurricanes outscored the Illini 24-12 in the final quarter to hand Illinois its first loss of the season, 73-64. Prior to the loss, the Illini had picked up dominant wins over Chicago State (67-36), Ohio University (62-53), UT Martin (94-74) and Tennessee State (98-43).
Chatrice White leads the team with 17.4 points and 8.6 rebounds per game. Cierra Rice follows with 14.2 points per game, while Kyley Simmons ranks third with 11.8. Simmons also leads the squad with 20 assists and 10 made three-pointers. A total of nine Illini have seen action this season. As a team, the Illini have outscored their opponents by an average mark of 21.2 points per game. Illinois has shot 45.0 percent from the field and 36.9 percent from downtown. The Illini control a +5.2 rebound margin.
Sunday's game will be the first-ever meeting between Lehigh and Illinois. The Mountain Hawks will be playing a Big Ten team for the second time in program history. Lehigh is 0-1 all-time vs. Big Ten teams as the Mountain Hawks dropped a 93-63 road contest at Ohio State on Nov. 27, 2013.
Following Sunday's game at Illinois, Lehigh will have an 11-day layoff for final exams before traveling to Rider on Dec. 17.
