Mountain Hawks head to preseason favorite Army to open league play Wednesday

BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- The Lehigh women's basketball team begins Patriot League play with a tough test Wednesday when the Mountain Hawks head to preseason favorite Army West Point for a 7 p.m. contest. Lehigh finished non-league play with a 7-4 record. The Mountain Hawks started the season 6-0 before dropping four straight to quality opponents. Lehigh earned a much-needed 63-56 road victory at Hampton on Dec. 20 in its most recent action. The Mountain Hawks were able to hold off the streaky Lady Pirates who pulled within three with 17 seconds remaining as Lehigh went 4-for-4 from the free-throw line down the stretch. Sophomore Quinci Mann led Lehigh with 21 points, while junior Lexi Martins recorded her ninth double-double of the season with 15 points and 15 rebounds. Mann and Martins both dished a team-best four assists. Senior Kerry Kinek chipped in seven points and 15 rebounds.
 
The Mountain Hawks own the highest-scoring offense in the league as Lehigh has averaged 71.3 points per game through its first 11 games of the season. Lehigh also leads the Patriot League in field goal percentage defense (34.9 percent) and rebounding margin (+9.5). The Mountain Hawks are led by Martins who averages 15.3 points and 15.3 rebounds per game. Her rebound margin ranks second in all of Division I, as does her nine double-doubles. Kinek follows with 14.6 points and 9.2 boards per contest, while Mann has chipped in 13.3 points per game and a team-best 31 assists.
 
Army West Point carries a strong 9-1 record that includes a 6-0 mark at home into Wednesday's Patriot League opener. Army's only loss of the season came on Nov. 22 when the Black Knights dropped a 72-61 decision at #14/9 Duke. Army has earned several impressive wins to highlight their 9-1 record including a 67-57 victory over defending MAAC champ Quinnipiac and a 65-62 over Albany, a team that was receiving votes in the national poll. The Black Knights captured an 86-47 victory over Emerson on Dec. 19 in their most recent action.
 
Army leads the Patriot League in a number of statistical categories including scoring defense (51.6 ppg), scoring margin (+17.4 ppg), field goal percentage (43.5), field goal percentage defense (34.9), three-point field goal percentage (41.7), three-point field goal percentage defense (24.8) and assists (14.8).
 
Preseason Patriot League Player of the Year Kelsey Minato leads the Patriot League with 22.9 points per game and 32 made three-pointers. Jean Parker follows with 8.4 points per contest, while Aimee Oertner has chipped in 7.8 points per game and a team-best 7.5 rebounds per contest.
 
Lehigh and Army will be meeting Wednesday for the first time since last season's Patriot League Semifinals when sixth-seeded Lehigh upset No. 2 Army on the road to earn a Patriot League Championship berth. The team's split last year's regular-season meetings with the home team winning on both occasions.
 
Four Mountain Hawks scored in double figures and Lehigh used a strong defensive effort to capture a 76-57 victory over the Black Knights in the PL semifinals on March 9, 2015. The Mountain Hawks trailed 19-17 with ten minutes left in the first half, but closed the opening term on a 20-6 run to take the lead for good. The victory marked Lehigh's first win in West Point since Feb. 14, 2010.
 
Sarah Williams led Lehigh with 17 points, while Mann followed with 16 points. Martins and Kinek both registered double-doubles as Martins finished with 16 points and 11 rebounds and Kinek recorded 13 points and 11 boards. The Black Knights were kept in the game by 33 points from Minato. Lehigh wrapped up the contest shooting 51.9 percent (28-for-54) from the field, 44.4 percent (4-for-9) from three-point range and 88.9 percent (16-for-18) from the charity stripe.
 
Following Wednesday's league opener, Lehigh will wrap up a five-game road swing Saturday at 2 p.m. when the Mountain Hawks travel to Boston University.
