HAMPTON, Va. -- The Lehigh women's basketball team was able to hold off a streaky Hampton team to secure a 63-56 road victory Sunday afternoon in the final non-league game of the season. The Lady Pirates made a late run to pull within three with 17 seconds remaining, but the Mountain Hawks went 4-for-4 from the line down the stretch to complete the win. Lehigh wraps up non-league play at 7-4 with the win, while Hampton falls to 1-9.

"Hampton was a good team despite its record," said head coach Sue Troyan. "They've played one of the toughest schedules in the country. This was a good win coming here on the road and I thought the kids really stepped up today especially after a disappointing loss at Rider."

Sophomore Quinci Mann led Lehigh with 21 points, while junior Lexi Martins recorded her ninth double-double of the season with 15 points and 15 rebounds. Mann and Martins both dished a team-best four assists. Senior Kerry Kinek chipped in seven points and 15 rebounds. Malia Tate-DeFreitas led Hampton with a game-high 25 points.

The Mountain Hawks finished the game shooting 44.2 percent (19-for-23) from the field, 58.3 percent (7-for-12) from three-point range and 64.3 percent (18-for-28) from the charity stripe. Lehigh held Hampton to a 31.9 percent (23-for-72) mark from the floor and 23.1 percent (6-for-26) showing from downtown. The Lady Pirates converted just four of their 12 (33.3 percent) free throw attempts. The Mountain Hawks held a strong 48-34 rebound edge.

A Mann three-pointer was followed by a Martins layup as Lehigh got out to a quick 5-0 lead and Hampton called an early timeout just 1:10 into the game. A three-pointer from Hampton's Ryan Jordan put the Lady Pirates on the board with 8:25 on the clock, but Lehigh answered with five more points as the Mountain Hawks extended their lead to 10-3 with 6:41 to play in the first quarter. The teams exchanged three-pointers before a three-plus minute scoring drought was broken by a layup from senior Elizabeth Sharlow. A Hampton free throw ended the opening stanza as Lehigh held a 15-7 lead.

Lehigh held onto a nine-point lead at 20-11 after an exchange of baskets two minutes into the second quarter before a Kinek layup was followed by a pair of three-pointers from senior Amina Affini and freshman Hailey Pascoe to extend the Mountain Hawk advantage to 28-11 with just over six minutes to play in the half. The Pascoe three would be Lehigh's last basket of the half as seven points from Tate-DeFreitas helped Hampton string together an 11-0 run and cut Lehigh's lead to 28-22 as the teams headed into the locker room.

A Hampton three-pointer opened the third quarter and pulled the Lady Pirates within three at 28-25, but a Martins layup at the 8:10 mark sparked a 15-2 Lehigh run that took over five minutes off the clock and put the Mountain Hawks ahead 43-27. Lehigh shot 5-for-6 from the field during the streak and added four free throws as the Mountain Hawks held Hampton to a 1-for-7 clip from the floor. A pair of free throws from Tate-DeFreitas broke the Lehigh streak and ignited a 12-2 Hampton run that pulled the Lady Pirates back within six at 45-39 before a Mann jumper ended the third quarter and Lehigh carried a 47-39 lead into the final stanza.

The Mountain Hawks pulled back ahead by double-figures following a Mann layup and Kinek free throw that put the score at 50-39, but the Lady Pirates held Lehigh scoreless for the next five-plus minutes and cut the Mountain Hawk lead to 50-45 and wind the clock down to 3:53. A technical foul on Hampton allowed Kinek to convert a pair of free throws that broke the scoreless streak and were followed by three free throws from Martins that put Lehigh back up by ten at 55-45 with 2:37 to play.

Lehigh was still ahead by two at 57-47 with just 1:10 left on the clock when Hampton began to turn to fouling the Mountain Hawks down the stretch. Lehigh made just two of its first five free throw attempts while Tate-DeFreitas hit four quick clutch baskets as Hampton was all of a sudden within three points at 59-56 with 17 seconds on the clock. Mann and sophomore Taylor Campbell stepped up to go 4-for-4 from the line down the stretch to seal the 63-56 victory.

"This was an important win for us and it came against a quality opponent," said Troyan. "We needed this before we head into league play at Army. It will be important for the team to have some good rest and family time before we get back at it in preparation of league play."

The Mountain Hawks will now take a break from game action until Dec. 30 when Lehigh opens Patriot League play at Army West Point. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. and free video will be available on the Patriot League Network.
