BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Coming off a 12-day break of games for final exams, the Lehigh men's basketball team returns to action on Thursday at Robert Morris. Opening tipoff is set for 7 p.m. Last time out, the Mountain Hawks picked up their first win of the season in convincing fashion, defeating Rochester College 84-50. Robert Morris is the defending NEC Champion and was the No. 2 team in the NEC preseason poll.
On Saturday, Dec. 5, Lehigh used a 16-2 run to turn a 13-3 tie into a 29-15 lead with 7:12 left in the first half. From there, the Mountain Hawks held a double-digit lead the rest of the way. Lehigh opened a 20, then 30-point second-half lead as the closest Rochester College would get is 29. A total team effort saw freshman Kyle Leufroy score 17 points on 7-of-10 shooting and 3-of-5 from three-point range. The effort earned Leufroy Patriot League Rookie of the Week honors. Junior Tim Kempton scored 16 points on 6-of-9 shooting and grabbed 14 rebounds (just one shy of tying a career high). In the process, Kempton became the 33rd player in school history and 105th in Patriot League history to reach 1,000 career points. He reached the milestone behind a layup with 17:34 left in the second half.
Two other Mountain Hawks posted double-figure points as junior Austin Price tallied 15 points, two assists, two blocks and four steals. Sophomore Kahron Ross just missed a double-double, recording 10 points and nine assists. Nine of ten Mountain Hawks played between 16 and 26 minutes. Sophomore walk-on Jay Jay Davis also played the final four minutes, posting his first-career points (5), rebound (1) and assist (1).
Lehigh dominated the glass, holding a 48-26 advantage, led by Kempton's 14. Every Lehigh player grabbed at least one rebound. The effort came against a strong Rochester College program out of the NAIA. The Warriors played three Division I games this season, which included a tight game at Western Michigan earlier this season. Rochester College was within five with less than six minutes remaining, eventually falling 85-73. Lehigh shot 50.8 percent from the field against the Warriors (30-of-59), eclipsing 50 percent from the floor for the first time since last season's Patriot League Quarterfinal vs. American when the Mountain Hawks shot 54.2 percent.
The defending NEC Tournament Champion, Robert Morris was predicted No. 2 in the preseason poll, but has struggled so far this season. The Colonials enter Thursday's game with a 1-9 overall record following a 78-71 loss at Columbia Monday afternoon. Robert Morris' victory this season came at Mississippi Valley State by a 67-64 final. Thursday will be the Colonials' third home game. They are shooting 41.4 percent from the field this season, but are giving up a 45.9 shooting percentage. Turnovers have been a problem as Robert Morris is averaging 16.3 turnovers per contest. Rodney Pryor, a senior, is leading the squad in scoring (21.8 points per game) and rebounding (7.8). Elijah Minnie is next up with averages of 11.7 and 6.2, respectively.
Lehigh and Robert Morris have split the first four all-time meetings, with the most recent coming on Nov. 12, 2012. The Mountain Hawks won that game in the NIT Season Tip-Off, 89-60. Five Lehigh players scored double-figure points, led by 19 from C.J. McCollum. The win marked Lehigh's second straight against the Colonials, also winning on Jan. 20, 1986. Robert Morris won the first two meetings, in 1977 and 1984.
After Thursday's contest, the Mountain Hawks will return home for the next four games, beginning on Saturday when they host Mount St. Mary's at 7 p.m.
