
Mountain Hawks welcome Saint Joseph’s for Education Day Wednesday

BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- The Lehigh women's basketball team will welcome more than 3,200 local school children to Stabler Arena Wednesday morning when the Mountain Hawks host A-10 foe Saint Joseph's on Lehigh's sixth-annual Education Day. Tipoff is set for 11 a.m. and the game will be televised live on Service Electric 2 Sports and will be also replayed at 7 p.m. Wednesday evening. Free live video will also be available on the Patriot League Network.
Lehigh carries a 6-1 record into Education Day and will be looking to bounce back from its first loss of the season Sunday when the Mountain Hawks fell 65-44 to Villanova in the title game of the Christmas City Classic. Senior Kerry Kinek led Lehigh with 15 points, while junior Lexi Martins followed with seven points and a game-high 12 rebounds. Both Kinek and Martins earned spots on the All-Tournament team. Sophomore Quinci Mann dished a team-best three assists.
Lehigh finished the game shooting 29.3 percent (17-for-58) from the field, 22.2 percent (4-for-18) from three-point range and 66.7 percent (6-for-9) from the free throw line. The Wildcats shot 41.4 percent (24-for-58) from the floor and 35.1 percent (13-for-37) from downtown. Lehigh held a 41-34 rebounding edge.
The Mountain Hawks lead the Patriot League in a number of statistical categories including scoring offense (76.0 ppg), scoring margin (+19.6 ppg), free throw percentage (76.9), field goal percentage (45.4), field goal percentage defense (33.2), three-point field goal percentage defense (23.6) and rebounding margin (+13.3).
Saint Joseph's carries a 1-3 record into Wednesday's Education Day game. The Hawks are coming off their first win of the season as Saint Joseph's took down Temple 70-67 Sunday.
The Hawks trailed the Owls 57-48 early in the fourth quarter, but Saint Joseph's put together a 14-3 run over a six minute span to take its first lead of the game. A Chelsea Woods layup with 21.3 seconds to play put the Hawks ahead for good at 68-67 before a pair of Saint Joseph's free throws made it 70-67 and the Hawks grabbed their first win of the season.
Ciara Andrews led the Hawks with 27 points and six assists against Temple, while Woods tallied 20 points and a game-high 12 rebounds.
Andrews leads the team for the season with 17.5 points per game, while Woods follows with 11.0 ppg. Sarah Fairbanks has chipped in 9.3 points and 8.0 rebounds per contest. The Hawks have been outscored by an average of 7.0 points per game and have shot 39.3 percent from the field compared to their opponents' average of 44.7 percent. Saint Joseph's has been outrebounded by an average of 2.0 boards per game.
Lehigh and Saint Joseph's will meet for the 13th time Wednesday. The Hawks hold a 9-3 all-time advantage, but Lehigh won the most recent meeting 73-71 on Dec. 4, 2014 in Philadelphia.
A layup from Quinci Mann with 4.4 seconds left on the clock lifted the Mountain Hawks to the 73-71 victory to move Lehigh's record to 7-0 in last season's meeting. Mann's game-winner capped off a night in which the rookie scored a team-best 14 points to go along with a five rebounds and three assists. Kinek chipped in 11 points and six rebounds, while Martins tallied eight points and seven rebounds. Ashley Robinson led Saint Joseph's with 20 points.
The Mountain Hawks finished the game shooting 56.4 percent (31-for-55) from the field and 46.2 percent (6-for-13) from three-point range. Lehigh held Saint Joseph's to a 36.2 percentage (25-for-69) from the floor and just 1-for-8 from downtown. The Hawks converted 20 of 24 free throw attempts compared to Lehigh's 5-for-7. For the first time this season, Lehigh was outrebounded as SJU held a 35-34 edge on the glass.
Following Wednesday's game, Lehigh will kick off a five game road swing when the Mountain Hawks head to Illinois Sunday for a 3 p.m. (ET) contest against the Illini.
