Lehigh faces first road test Thursday at NJIT

BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- The Lehigh women's basketball team looks to continue its strong start to the season Thursday when the Mountain Hawks head to NJIT for their first road game of the 2015-16 campaign. Tipoff is set for 5 p.m. and free audio coverage will be available on 91.3 WLVR FM.
 
Lehigh kicked off the season with a 95-88 overtime victory over Monmouth Friday in Stabler Arena before cruising to an 81-51 over Kutztown Sunday afternoon. The Mountain Hawks trailed Monmouth  by as many as ten points in the third quarter, but Lehigh rallied to take a four point lead before the Hawks forced overtime. The Mountain Hawks outscored Monmouth 14-7 in the extra period to come away with the victory. Senior Kerry Kinek, junior Lexi Martins and sophomore Quinci Mann all scored 21 points to lead the Mountain Hawks.
 
Lehigh held onto a slim four-point lead over Kutztown heading into halftime Sunday before outscoring the Golden Bears 45-19 in the second half to earn an 81-51 victory in Stabler Arena. Kinek scored a game-high 21 points, while Martins tallied her second-straight double-double with 20 points and 14 rebounds. Senior Amina Affini scored a career-high 15 points.
 
Both Kinek and Martins average a double-double so far this season with Kinek holding marks of 21.0 points and 10.0 rebounds per game and Martins averaging 20.5 points and 17.0 rebounds per game. Junior Kayla Burton leads the team with nine assists.
 
The Mountain Hawks have outscored their opponents by an average of 18.5 points per game in the two opening contests and have shot 49.2 percent (61-for-124) from the field. Lehigh also holds a +11.5 rebound advantage.
 
The Highlanders opened the 2015-16 season Monday evening at Binghamton, dropping a tight 54-50 battle to the Bearcats. Binghamton held a four-point lead at halftime and the two teams played even in the second half.
 
Olivia Dudley scored a team-best 15 points for NJIT, followed by Camerin Spahn with 14 points. Maria Ruban pulled down a squad-high 12 rebounds in addition to her eight points. Sisters Alana and Olivia Dudley each dished four assists.
 
The Highlanders shot 43.8 percent (7-for-16) from three point range and five of those three-pointers were from Olivia Dudley. NJIT finished the game with a 35.1 percent (20-for-57) clip from the field. The Highlanders held a 43-39 rebound advantage and held Binghamton to a 32.2 percent (19-for-59) from the field.
 
NJIT turned the ball over 16 times which translated into 14 Binghamton points.
 
The Mountain Hawks aim to stay undefeated against NJIT Thursday when Lehigh heads to New Jersey. Lehigh has won all nine meetings with the Highlanders, including a 74-54 win on the road a season ago.
 
A pair of double-doubles from Kinek and Martins helped Lehigh to the wire-to-wire win. Martins tallied 19 points and 13 rebounds, while Kinek finished with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Elizabeth Sharlow also finished in double-figures with 12 points. Mann finished the game with five assists, no turnovers, two steals and a block. NJIT was led by Alana Dudley with 12 points.
 
The Mountain Hawks finished the game shooting 46.3 percent (25-for-54) from the field and 29.4 percent (5-for-17) from three-point range. The Highlanders, led by Dudley with 12 points, shot 37.7 percent (20-for-53) from the field. Lehigh held a dominant 45-20 rebound advantage.
 
Following Thursday's contest, Lehigh will remain on the road Monday to take on Delaware State at 7 p.m.
