2015-16 season tips off at home against Monmouth and Kutztown this weekend

BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- The Lehigh women's basketball team opens up the 2015-16 season this weekend when the Mountain Hawks host Monmouth and Kutztown at Stabler Arena. Lehigh welcomes Monmouth at 7 p.m. Friday before taking on Kutztown at 2 p.m. Sunday. Tickets are available at Lehightickets.com or by calling 610-7LU-GAME. The Mountain Hawks are coming off a 2014-15 season that saw Lehigh go 19-12 overall and 9-9 in Patriot League play. Lehigh made its first Patriot League Championship appearance since 2010 as the Mountain Hawks earned the No. 6 seed in the tournament and picked up road wins at No. 3 Holy Cross and No. 2 Army before falling to American in the championship contest.

Lehigh returns 12 letterwinners and three starters from last year's campaign. The returning Mountain Hawks accounted for 73 percent of last year's total points, 80.1 percent of made three-pointers, 84.7 percent of total rebounds and 72.3 percent of total minutes.

Current junior Lexi Martins led last year's squad with 14.0 points and 11.1 rebounds per game and recently earned a spot on the five-person preseason All-Patriot League team. Three-time All-League member and current senior Kerry Kinek followed with 11.5 points and 7.6 rebounds per contest.

Monmouth is coming off a season that saw the Hawks finish with a 13-18 overall record and 8-12 mark in MAAC play. The Hawks were eliminated from the MAAC Tournament by eventual champion Quinnipiac in the quarterfinal round. Monmouth was predicted to finish ninth in this season's preseason MAAC poll.

Monmouth returns its top three scorers from last year's campaign, led by guard Sarah Olson who tallied 11.5 points and 3.7 rebounds a season ago. Olson was named to the preseason All-MAAC Third team. The Hawks also return Helena Kurt (11.4 ppg) and Jasmine Walker (8.0 ppg) from last season's starting lineup. The Hawks also return their leading rebounder from last year's campaign in Christina Mitchell who averaged 6.9 boards per game.

The Hawks return ten letterwinners from last year's campaign. Monmouth adds three new players to this year's roster in freshmen McKinzee Barker and Erica Balman as well as transfer Tyese Purvis (Monroe C.C.).

Monmouth averaged 63.3 points per game last season compared to their opponents' average of 66.5. The Hawks shot 29.4 percent from three-point range and were outrebounded by an average clip of 2.2 boards per game.

The Mountain Hawks and Monmouth have met eight times dating back to the 1994-95 season and Monmouth holds a 6-2 all-time advantage.

The two teams met in last year's season opener at Monmouth and Lehigh was able to capture an 82-70 victory to secure the 300th win of head coach Sue Troyan's career. The Mountain Hawks held a slim lead for a majority of the game before breaking a 59-59 tie with an 11-2 run to grab a 70-61 lead with five minutes remaining.

Martins tallied her first-career double-double in the victory with 15 points and ten rebounds to help the Mountain Hawks finish with a 48-37 edge on the glass. Quinci Mann scored 16 points and dished five assists in her collegiate debut. Monmouth was led by Sarah Olson who knocked down six three-pointers on ten attempts. Lehigh shot 53 percent from the field (31-of-59) and 39 percent from three-point range (5-of-13). Monmouth finished 33 percent (26-of-78) and 33 percent from long range (10-of-31).

Kutztown was picked to finish sixth in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division Preseason Poll after finishing the 2014-15 season 12-16 overall and 10-12 in the PSAC. The Golden Bears defeated Lock Haven in the first round of the PSAC Tournament before falling to Bloomsburg in the quarterfinals.

The Golden Bears graduated three of their top five scorers and rebounders from last season, but return two starters in Natalya Lee and Kelsey Watson. Watson average 10.0 points and 6.4 rebounds a season ago, while Lee put up marks of 9.9 points and 4.6 rebounds per contest. Several young players are expected to step into starting roles.

Kutztown averaged 64.1 points per game a season ago compared to its opponents' average of 63.7. The Golden Bears shot 29.4 percentage from three-point range and outrebounded their opponents by an average mark of 1.9 boards per game.

Sunday's game against Kutztown will be the first regular-season meeting between the two teams since the 1982-83 season. Lehigh holds a 5-4 all-time advantage over the Golden Bears in regular-season meetings. The series began during the 1974-75 season.
