BETHLEHEM, Pa. – With the regular season in the books, the Lehigh women's cross country team is set for the Patriot League Championships this Saturday in Hamilton, N.Y.
Last season, Lehigh hosted the championships and raced to a sixth place finish on the rain-soaked Goodman Campus Course, with junior Elizabeth Weiler earning First Team All-Patriot League honors with a second place finish overall. Laura Barnes was Lehigh's second place finisher in 40th place, and was the fifth freshman to cross the finish line. Departed senior Ingrid Simon, Arielle Weiner, Shannon Wright, Ashley Strysko and Hannah Leskow rounded out the Mountain Hawks top seven.
Most recently, Lehigh split up to compete at both the Princeton and Leopard Invitationals on Oct. 17. Lehigh finished 16th out of 24 teams at Princeton, which featured several regionally ranked teams including Penn, Pitt, Duquesne and UMBC. Barnes led the field of Mountain Hawks with a 68th place, 22:51.2 finish, with Weiner and Marissa Karl following just behind. At Lafayette's Leopard Invitational, sophomore Samantha Lerner was first among Lehigh's three runners with a 34th place performance.
So far this season, Barnes and Wright have each been Lehigh's top finisher on two separate occasions, including Wright's first career win at the Lafayette dual meet. Karl has finished in the team's top four in all three of her meets, Strysko and Stephanie Hayes each have a top three finish, and Weiner has a pair of second and fifth place team finishes to her credit.
"Laura Barnes has had to come into a new role the last couple meets as a frontrunner, but she's not the only one capable of being in that role," said head coach Debbie Utesch. "We're hoping some other people will step up this weekend and see if we can get a runner or two to be All-Patriot League."
Entering the championship, Navy (8) and Bucknell (11) are the only two Patriot League teams ranked in their respective regions. Lehigh was picked sixth in the Patriot League's preseason poll.
Lehigh had a second place at the 2013 championships on Lafayette's course. Finishing just 10 points behind Boston University, Lehigh placed four runners in the top 10 with Jennifer Markham leading the way in fourth place. The Mountain Hawks finished fourth overall back in 2012, the last time the championships were held at Colgate.
The women's championship race is scheduled for noon, following the conclusion of the men's 11 a.m. race. Complete results and a recap will be available on Lehighsports.com at the conclusion of the day's events.
