BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Coming off one of its best efforts of the season, the Lehigh men's basketball team looks to ride the momentum into a Saturday afternoon showdown against Loyola. Tipoff in Stabler Arena is set for 2 p.m. Both the Mountain Hawks and Greyhounds are coming off impressive wins on Wednesday to improve to 1-2 in league play.
Â
Lehigh put together a stellar defensive effort against Army on Wednesday, holding the Black Knights to a season-low 60 points (12 lower than their previous season low). Army entered the game leading the Patriot League with a 79.2 scoring average. The Black Knights shot just 34 percent from the field (compared to their 47 percent season average) while the league's preseason Player of the Year Kyle Wilson scored 17 points, but was just 6-of-18 from the field and 3-of-12 from three-point range.
Â
The Mountain Hawks' offense struggled early on, but the defense set the tone and the offense caught fire, especially in the second half. Lehigh shot just one second-half three-pointer (a Corey Schaefer made trey) and fed the interior with sophomore Tim Kempton and junior Justin Goldsborough. At one point, the Mountain Hawks had three straight three-point play opportunities after Army briefly took a 50-48 lead, all in the span of 44 seconds. That gave Lehigh a six-point, 56-50 lead and the Mountain Hawks wouldn't look back as they won their fifth road game in their last seven tries.
Â
Kempton scored a team-high 19 points and added ten rebounds for his seventh double-double of the season (and 13th of his career). He was 9-of-12 from the free throw line. Goldsborough added 13 points and four rebounds. Freshman Kahron Ross enjoyed a stellar bounceback game, scoring 13 points while dishing eight assists and grabbing four rebounds. Senior Corey Schaefer scored all ten of his points in the second half to go with a career-high seven rebounds for the game.
Â
Loyola and Lehigh are two of five teams with a 1-2 league mark. The Mountain Hawks look to get going at home on Saturday as they're just 2-3 in Stabler Arena this season compared to 5-4 on the road. Meanwhile, the Greyhounds are 3-3 at home, but just 1-6 on the road. Loyola lost its leading scorer Dylon Cormier, but Tyler Hubbard has stepped up and leads the team in scoring with an 11.8 average this season.
Â
Loyola enters with a 5-9 overall record. The Greyhounds own wins over Cornell, UMBC, Columbia, Fairfield and American this season and have featured a balanced team with six players averaging six points or more. Hubbard leads the offense with his 11.8 scoring average while Eric Laster averages 9.6 points per game and Andre Walker comes in at 8.6 per contest. Cam Gregory leads the team in rebounding with his 6.9 average (to go with 6.0 points per game). Loyola has struggled offensively this season, averaging just 54.8 points per game while shooting just 35.7 percent from the field.
Â
Lehigh leads the all-time series, 6-5 after splitting the 2013-14 season series. Prior to last season, the teams hadn't played since November of 1988. The sides first met in 1912-13, a 41-19 Lehigh victory. Loyola's first win was in 1915-16 by a 35-15 final.
Â
After Saturday's game, Lehigh hits the road next Wednesday (Jan. 14) to face defending Patriot League Champion American at 7:30 p.m. in our nation's capital.
