Mountain Hawks host defending Patriot League champion Army Wednesday

BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- The Lehigh women's basketball team faces a tough test Wednesday evening when the Mountain Hawks host defending Patriot League champion and preseason favorite Army. The game features the league's highest-scoring offense (Lehigh) pitted against the league's most stout defense (Army). Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. from Stabler Arena and the contest can be viewed locally on Service Electric 2 Sports or for free online via the Patriot League Network.
 
The Mountain Hawks are off to a 2-0 start in Patriot League play for the first time since the 2008-09 season. Lehigh opened league competition with an 86-68 victory at Colgate before downing Boston University 85-64 Saturday inside Stabler Arena. Lehigh's 10-2 overall record is its best start to a season since the 2009-10 squad began 13-2.
 
Lehigh used another strong offensive effort and an impressive defensive second half to capture an 85-64 win over the Terriers Saturday. The Mountain Hawks controlled a 45-41 lead at halftime, but held the Terriers to just 23 second-half points. Sophomore Lexi Martins led the way once again, tallying her ninth double-double of the season with a career-high 26 points and 12 rebounds. Senior Katie O'Reilly chipped in 11 points and freshman Quinci Mann followed with 10 points. Junior Kerry Kinek was held under ten points for the first time this season and finished the contest with eight points and seven rebounds.
 
Lehigh leads the Patriot League and ranks eighth nationally in field goal percentage with a mark of 47.8. The Mountain Hawks' 77.1 points per game ranks 28th in Division I and also leads the Patriot League. Martins sits atop the league charts in rebounds per game (10.6) and leads Lehigh with 16.8 points per contest. Her nine double-doubles this season rank ninth in all of Division I. Kinek follows with 13.8 points and 8.3 rebounds p er contest, while junior Elizabeth Sharlow holds a league-best 67.2 field goal percentage.
 
The defending Patriot League champion and preseason favorite Black Knights enter Wednesday's game with a 9-3 overall record and 1-1 mark in Patriot League play. Army dropped a 71-60 decision at Lafayette to open league play last Wednesday before rebounding with a 55-44 victory over Loyola Saturday. The Black Knights are 5-0 at home and 4-3 on the road so far this season.
 
Army received double-digit contributions from juniors Kelsey Minato and Aimee Oertner, as Minato netted 20 and Oertner finished with 15 against Loyola on Saturday. Minato, who also finished with five rebounds, shot a perfect 8-for-8 from the free-throw line, while Oertner hit a game-high-tying seven field goals to finish 7-of-9 from the floor. Senior Olivia Schretzman contributed seven points, six boards and three assists for the hosts.
 
The Black Knights lead the Patriot League in scoring defense (53.0 ppg), scoring margin (+11.8 ppg), rebounding defense (31.2), turnover margin (+2.75) and assist/turnover ratio (1.1). Minato, the two-time defending Patriot League Player of the Year, leads the league with 23.3 points per game.
 
Lehigh will be looking to snap a four-game losing streak to the Black Knights this evening. The Mountain Hawks hold a one-game lead in the all-time series between the two squads 28-27.
 
Lehigh couldn't hold on to a 17-point halftime lead in the last meeting on Feb. 24, 2014 as Army outscored the Mountain Hawks 48-22 in the second half en route to a 78-69 win. Lehigh shot a blistering 65.4 percent in the first half, but Army answered with a 7-for-12 showing from beyond the arc in the second half to claim its 20th win of the season.
 
Kerry Kinek led the Mountain Hawks with 18 points and five rebounds. Sarah Williams chipped in 15 on a 4-for-4 effort from downtown, while Kiernan McCloskey tallied a career-high 12 points after shooting 4-for-4 from floor with a three-pointer added in. Army's Kelsey Minato scored a game-high 31 points while dishing six assists. Lehigh shot 44.9 percent (22-for-49) from the floor for the game. The Mountain Hawks made 5-of-23 shots in the second half following a 17-for-26 effort in the first. Army shot 55.2 percent (16-for-29) in the second half and 40.9 percent (27-for-66) for the game. Army held a 40-34 rebound advantage including an 18-8 edge on the offensive glass.
