
Lehigh and Lafayette renew rivalry in Easton on Saturday afternoon

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Riding consecutive wins over Holy Cross and Navy, the Lehigh men's basketball team heads to archrival Lafayette on Saturday to face the Leopards. Opening tipoff is set for 2 p.m. The two sides enter with identical 3-4 league records in the logjam that is the Patriot League standings. Lehigh and Lafayette are two of five teams tied for fifth place, just two games behind first-place Bucknell and Colgate.

The Mountain Hawks have gotten going at home as of late, beating Holy Cross 69-64 then Navy 61-47. The Midshipmen took an early second-half lead on Wednesday, but Lehigh responded to take as much as an 18-point advantage as the Mountain Hawks cruised to their tenth straight win over Navy. Freshman Brandon Alston led the way with 14 points (ten in the first half) and a career-high six rebounds. He shot 5-of-8 from the field and 3-of-4 from three-point range. Classmate Kahron Ross tallied nine points and seven assists, every assist coming in the second half. Three others reached double-figure points as sophomore Austin Price had 11 while junior Justin Goldsborough and sophomore Tim Kempton scored ten. No Mountain Hawk had double-figure field goal attempts.

The 47 points allowed marked a season-best for the Lehigh defense. The Mountain Hawks broke a 34-34 second-half tie with a 10-0 run and wouldn't look back. Junior Jesse Chuku ended the run with a three-pointer for the ten-point advantage as Chuku enjoyed a strong all-around game with seven points, three rebounds, three assists and two steals. Kempton had nine rebounds to go with his ten points, falling just shy of his third-straight double-double. He entered the week 15th in the nation in double-doubles. Kempton is now averaging 14.5 points and a league-leading 8.9 rebounds this season, averaging nearly a double-double in Patriot League play (17.1 points, 9.7 rebounds).

Saturday's game against Lafayette features the second and third leading scoring teams in the Patriot League. The Leopards have averaged 75.7 points per game while the Mountain Hawks come in at 67.0. The teams enter tied in a bunched-up Patriot League.

Lafayette enters with an 11-7 record and 3-4 mark in the Patriot League. Owning a 6-2 home record, the Leopards enjoyed a strong 8-3 nonleague mark before jumping out to a 3-2 league record. They've lost their last two games in heartbreaking fashion, to American and at Holy Cross. Dan Trist leads the team in scoring (17.0 ppg) and rebounding (6.6 rpg), respectively. Preseason All-Patriot League honoree Seth Hinrichs averages 14.5 points and 5.9 rebounds while Joey Ptasinski comes in at 11.1 points and 3.2 boards. He's shooting a sizzling 52.6 percent from three-point range (51-of-97). Nick Lindner has averaged 8.6 points and 5.6 assists per game. The Leopards are second in the league in scoring average (75.7), but last in scoring defense (73.4).Â

Lafayette leads the all-time series, 138-81 which includes four wins in its last five tries. The teams split last year's season series with both teams winning at home. Lehigh won 71-68 in Stabler Arena while Lafayette won 77-71 in the Kirby Sports Center. The Mountain Hawks won five in a row from 2010-12 before the Leopards' latest streak of four of the last five. The long-time rivals first met in 1901-92, a 46-13 Lehigh victory. Lehigh won the first four games with Lafayette's first win coming in 1914-15.
