BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh men's track and field team finished third in the Angry Birds Invitational Saturday afternoon inside Rauch Fieldhouse. Monmouth finished first with 179 team points and was followed by Penn (134), Lehigh (130) and Saint Joseph's (93). The Mountain Hawks picked up a pair of first-place finishes to highlight a successful home meet.
"I was very impressed with a lot of the performances today," said head coach Matt Utesch. "The meet showed the true competitive spirit of our kids and it was nice to see a lot of the younger kids step up today."
Senior Adeolu Adesida picked up another high jump title with an IC4A-qualifying 2.15 meter leap. Classmate Derek Gaul won the long jump with a 6.97 meter jump.
Also in the field events, freshman Trevor Knowles placed third in the pole vault with a 4.40 meter vault. Lehigh took third through fifth in the triple jump, led by freshman Fritz Isaac with a leap of 13.82 meters. Sophomore Daniel Reichenbach (13.67m) and freshman Michael Gooding (13.55m) followed in fourth and fifth, respectively. Sophomore Lucas Warning finished fifth in the shot put with a mark of 15.70 meters. Senior Benjamin Beauchamp was Lehigh's highest finisher in the weight throw with a heave of 16.03 meters that was good for fifth place.
On the track, junior Evan Ward was Lehigh's highest finisher in the 5,000 meter run, placing second with a clip of 15:06.54. Sophomore Christopher Del Rossi finished third in the 200 meter dash with a time of 22.82 seconds, narrowly missing the IC4A qualifying mark of 22.24. Senior Justin Mahoney followed in fourth place with a clip of 23.08 seconds. Del Rossi was also Lehigh's highest finisher in the 400 meter dash, finishing seventh with a mark of 50.64 seconds.
"I thought Chris Del Rossi was one of the great stories of the meet," said Utesch. "He's really coming along and keeping healthy, so we're very excited about what he can do. Also, a lot of our young distance guys ran great races today even though they weren't up top."
Senior Mitchell Biler picked up fifth place in the 800 meter run with a time of 1:58.22. Isaac was Lehigh's highest finisher in the 60 meter hurdles with a time of 8.67 seconds that was good for fifth place. Freshman Cole Mehr (7.21) placed sixth in the 60 meter dash and was followed closely by Gaul (7.26), senior Justin Mahoney (7.26) and freshman Jake Sabatini (7.27).
The Mountain Hawks return to action next Saturday inside Rauch Fieldhouse as Lehigh hosts archrival Lafayette in the annual indoor dual meet.
"We gathered a lot of momentum this week heading into next weekend's big meet," said Utesch. "We were sore and tired from a week of camp and I saw the competitive spirit come out in our kids. I'm excited to see what they'll do next weekend with fresh legs and that same competitive spirit."
