Lehigh opens season vs. Saint Joseph’s Friday, hosts Saint Francis (Pa.) Sunday

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Lehigh field hockey team opens its season with a pair of home games this weekend as the Mountain Hawks welcome Saint Joseph's on Friday (4 p.m.) and Saint Francis (Pa.) on Sunday (1 p.m.). Lehigh plays five of its first six games and eight of its first 11 at home.
Both Friday and Sunday will feature a free broadcast through the Patriot League Network, along with live stats.
Lehigh features a strong mix through the classes as six talented freshmen join an experienced squad. The Mountain Hawks' leading scorers last season were sophomores Marissa Glatt and Gabby Tofig, who combined for 36 points (16 goals, four assists). Junior Lindsey Schott also scored a career-high three goals while classmate Erin Ricker tied for the team lead with three assists.
The Mountain Hawks return experience on the defensive end as well, spearheaded by sophomore Julia Ward in goal. She led the Patriot League with 152 saves, finishing third with a .756 save percentage. She dished consecutive shutouts (against Towson and Georgetown) while holding a strong Lock Haven program to a single goal.
Saint Joseph's finished last season 6-13 and 3-4 in the Atlantic 10. The Hawks' top three scorers all return, led by Jordan Martin and her 23 points (eight goals, seven assists). Sarah Yerk posted 11 (four goals, three assists) and Nicole Gerdes had eight (three goals, two assists). Saint Joseph's starting goalie Rachel Barnett graduated, but Amelia Deibler saw significant time last season, posting a .651 save percentage and 3.90 GAA in seven games (four starts).
Lehigh is 12-13-1 all-time against Saint Joseph's, last playing the Hawks in 2011, a 1-0 road loss. The last time the teams played in Bethlehem was 2010, a 6-4 Saint Joseph's victory.
Saint Francis (Pa.) enjoyed an improved season in 2013, finishing 8-8 overall and 3-4 in the Atlantic 10. Three Red Flash reached double-figure goals last season as Autumn Pellman, Selena Adamshick and Carissa Makea combined for 39 of the team's 42 goals. Pellman graduated and brings a team-leading 17 goals with her, but Adamshick posted 12 goals and eight assists while Makea finished with 10 goals and five assists. Nikki Snyder also returns after dishing a team-high 10 assists. Samantha Zeiders, the team's primary goalkeeper last season, returns after starting 10 games while recording a 2.36 GAA and .719 save percentage.
The Mountain Hawks are 3-4 all-time against the Red Flash, but haven't beaten Saint Francis since 2009, a 3-1 road victory. The Red Flash won last year's matchup, 6-3.
After this weekend, the Mountain Hawks return to action next Friday (Sept. 5) when they travel to Penn to face the Quakers.
