ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Lehigh women's track and field team is tied for first place after the opening day of the outdoor Patriot League Championships at Navy's Ingram Track. The Mountain Hawks and Army both have recorded 42 points to tie for the top spot, while Boston University (38), Bucknell (35.50), Lafayette (34) and host Navy (29) aren't far behind. Sophomore Elizabeth Weiler's claimed the 10,000 meter title to highlight the first day for Lehigh.
"It's always great to start off the day with a Patriot League championship and that was the first time Liz ever ran the event," said head coach Matt Utesch. "People are doing what they're supposed to be doing. We've got a lot of people scoring points and we've done our work today to set us up for tomorrow. I like the position that we're in."
Weiler won the 10,000 meter race to begin the day at Navy. Weiler's blistering pace of 35:21.95 was just a second shy of the Patriot League meet record. She blew away the competition, finishing 24 seconds ahead of the second-place finisher. Weiler is just the third-ever Lehigh female to win the race at the outdoor Patriot League Championships.
The 4x800 meter relay team of senior Jessica Kendzor, freshman Amanda Ruschel and juniors Victoria Mullane and Ingrid Simon finished second with a clip of 8:57.58 to secure eight team points.
Senior Brooke Astor took second in the long jump to garner eight points after a leap of 5.68m. Senior Jimil Ataman finished third in the hammer throw with a launch of 54.69m and secured six points for the Mountain Hawks. Sophomore Gabrielle Wardle (41.28m) and junior Carly Deskins (40.89) finished fourth and fifth in the javelin throw to accumulate nine team points.
Astor currently sits in second place in the women's heptathlon, while Wardle, Natalie Bates and Sarah Cassidy are also in scoring positions. Only four of the seven heptathlon events have been finished.
Junior Serenah Polite, Astor and freshman Katie Hatler all advanced to Saturday's 100 meter hurdles finals after placing third, fourth and eighth, respectively, in the prelims. Polite finished the race in a new personal best time of 14.30 to pick up third, while Astor was right behind with a mark of 14.82. Hatler finished in 15.08.
Freshman Kaitlyn Ruffing just missed a spot in the finals of the 200 meter dash with her new personal best time of 25.45 that was good for ninth place in the prelims.
