Lehigh tops Bucknell 5-2 for second straight league win

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh men's tennis team posted its second straight Patriot League win as the Mountain Hawks downed Bucknell 5-2 Wednesday inside the Lewis Tennis Center. The Mountain Hawks won the doubles point and claimed four of six singles matches to improve to 10-6 overall and 2-1 in league matches.
Bucknell falls to 3-15 overall and 2-4 in the Patriot League.
The match began with Lehigh claiming two of three doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead. Lehigh's No. 2 team of junior Ben Gilman and sophomore Jeremy Kochman won 8-3 over Bryan Adams and Scott Bernstein. The Mountain Hawks clinched the doubles point at the No. 3 flight as senior Timur Chernykh and freshman Tyler Hansen won 8-5 over Octavio Canibe and Chris Tortora. The Bison prevented a Lehigh doubles sweep with a win in a tiebreak at the top flight.
In singles play, the Bison pulled even at 1-1 as Nick Bybel won 6-1, 6-1 over senior Mark Goldberg at the top flight.
Lehigh pulled back ahead 3-1 as Gilman and junior Mitchell Petersen won in straight sets at the second and third flights.
The bottom three singles flights featured tightly contested first sets, all three of which were decided in tiebreaks.
At the No. 4 flight, Kyle Rosen won the tiebreak 9-7 and went on to defeat Kochman 7-6, 6-3. Hansen answered with a 7-4 tiebreak win at fifth singles and went on to defeat John DeFrancesch 7-6, 6-4 to clinch the match for the Mountain Hawks.
Chernykh closed out the match with a straight set win over Tortora at No. 6 singles, winning the second set 6-0 after a tiebreak win in the first set.
The Mountain Hawks will play their final three regular season matches on the road, beginning Saturday when they visit Navy for a 1:30 p.m. match in Annapolis, Md.
