ANNAPOLIS, Md. – In a rematch of last year's Patriot League Championship final, Navy swept the doubles matches and won three of the first four singles matches to finish, exacting a small bit of revenge with a 4-3 win over Lehigh Saturday on the USNA Tennis Courts. Senior Timur Chernykh, junior Ben Gilman and freshman Tyler Hansen posted singles wins for the Mountain Hawks, who fall to 10-7 overall and 2-2 in league matches.
Navy finishes its regular season at 16-9, 3-2.
All three doubles matches were tightly contested and decided by 8-6 scores, but the host Midshipmen found a way to win all three. At the No. 3 flight Alex Gaines and Krishna Jana defeated Chernykh and Hansen to open doubles play. The Mids then clinched the doubles point when Austin Jones and Thomas Pecor defeated senior Mark Goldberg and junior Mitchell Petersen at the top flight.
Lehigh evened the team score in singles play when Gilman won his match at No. 2 singles after Jones retired due to injury while leading 4-3 in the first set.
The Mids responded with straight set wins in the next three matches to clinch the victory. The clinching win came at the top flight as Calvin Mark downed Goldberg 6-4, 6-4.
Lehigh claimed the final two singles flights as Hansen defeated Jana 10-4 in a third set ten point tiebreak at No. 5 singles and Chernykh won 7-5, 6-4 over Tyler Tossavainen at the sixth flight.
The Mountain Hawks have two more matches before next weekend's Patriot League Tournament at Army. Lehigh will visit rival Lafayette on Monday before returning to Maryland on Tuesday to face Loyola. Both matches are set for 3 p.m. starts.
