
Lehigh bests Lafayette 6-1 for sixth straight win over rivals

The Rivalry: Lehigh vs. Lafayette
EASTON, Pa. – In its next to last match of the regular season, the Lehigh men's tennis team posted its sixth straight victory over arch rival Lafayette as the Mountain Hawks went to Easton and beat the Leopards on their home court 6-1 Monday afternoon. The Mountain Hawks won two doubles matches to clinch the first point and then won five of six singles matches in straight sets.
The win improves Lehigh's record to 11-7 overall and 3-2 in Patriot League matches. Lafayette falls to 3-10, 1-7 in league matches.
Doubles play began with Lehigh's No. 2 team of junior Ben Gilman and sophomore Jeremy Kochman winning 8-3 over Brian Pinkard and T.J. Morgan. Lehigh clinched the doubles point at the No. 3 flight as freshman Tyler Hansen teamed with senior Timur Chernkyh to beat Chris Matturri and Gavin Studner 8-6. The Leopards salvaged a win at the top doubles flight as Brandon Goldstein and Brian Stefanowicz bested senior Mark Goldberg and junior Mitchell Petersen 8-6.
In singles play, Lehigh head coach Wouter Hendrix opted to pull Goldberg and move the rest of his lineup up one spot. Gilman moved into the No. 1 singles spot and beat Goldstein 6-1, 6-3. Petersen handled Pinkard 6-4, 6-1 at the No. 2 flight. Kochman clinched the match for the Mountain Hawks, winning 6-2, 6-2 at the No. 3 flight.
Lehigh also got straight set wins from Chernykh over Morgan at No. 5 singles and freshman Ethan Bogard, who downed Matturri 6-3, 6-3 at the sixth flight. Lafayette's lone point came from Stefanowicz, who defeated Hansen 7-5, 6-1 at the No. 4 spot.
The Mountain Hawks will close out the regular season with a 3 p.m. match at Loyola on Tuesday, before shifting focus to the Patriot League Tournament, which for Lehigh will begin Friday at West Point, N.Y.
