BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Despite a minor tweak to the schedule, the Lehigh softball team will still host a doubleheader Wednesday at Kaufman Field. The Mountain Hawks were originally scheduled to face a Princeton team, led by former Lehigh standout Lisa Sweeney '09, but the Tigers have to make up an Ivy League doubleheader on Thursday. In Princeton's place, Lehigh will face the Hawks of Saint Joseph's in the first meeting between the schools since 2009.
The Mountain Hawks are 20-15 overall after winning two of three games at Bucknell this past weekend. Lehigh sits atop the Patriot League standings by two full games over the Bison and by one game in the loss column over the trio of Holy Cross, Boston University and Army.
Sophomore Alexis Watanabe led the Mountain Hawks at the plate last week, going 11-for-23 for a .478 batting average over six games. The San Marino, Calif. native leads the Mountain Hawks with a .382 batting average and 47 hits this season. For her efforts last week, Watanabe was recognized as Patriot League Player of the Week on Monday.
Junior pitcher Emily Bausher was phenomenal in the circle against Bucknell, earning both wins for the Mountain Hawks in the series. Her performance was highlighted by a one-hit shutout with a season-high 12 strikeouts in the 2-0 victory in Sunday's rubber match. The New Egypt, N.J. native was recognized as Patriot League Pitcher of the Week on Monday following a 3-0 week in which she allowed just five runs in 22 innings of work.
Saint Joseph's enters Wednesday's doubleheader at 14-15 overall. The Hawks split four league games over the weekend, splitting a two-game series at Saint Louis and a Sunday doubleheader at Dayton.
Hannah Dionne leads Saint Joseph's offensively with a .361 average, while Brandi Harkness has been the top run producer with three home runs and 16 runs batted in. Liz Mendez has seen the most time in the pitcher's circle, going 6-8 with a 3.54 ERA and 65 strikeouts in 85 innings.
Saint Joseph's leads the all-time series 22-13 but Lehigh has won the last eight meetings dating back to 2002, including a 3-2 win in the most recent meeting in 2009.
First pitch for game one Wednesday is set for 3:15 p.m. from Kaufman Field. Streaming audio of both games will be available at Lehighsports.com/showcase(.)
