BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Travel issues caused by traffic in the Philadelphia area delayed the arrival of Saint Joseph's at Kaufman Field and turned Wednesday's scheduled doubleheader into a single game. When Lehigh and Saint Joseph's finally took to the field, the Mountain Hawks rallied out of an early 1-0 hole with five runs over the fourth and fifth innings to win 5-1.
Freshman Christine Campbell pitched five scoreless earnings of relief to earn the victory while sophomore Morgan Decker drilled her sixth home run of the season. With the win, Lehigh improves to 21-15 while Saint Joseph's falls to 14-16.
Saint Joseph's took a 1-0 lead with an unearned run in the top of the second inning. Senior Ashley Quigley started in the circle and loaded the bases with two out after a walk and two hit batters. Madeline Brunck then hit a ground ball to the right of the pitcher's circle but first baseman Cassie Waggy couldn't handle the throw allowing Ashley Alden to score.
A pair of double plays silenced Lehigh rallies in the second and third innings before the Mountain Hawks finally broke through in the fourth. Sophomore Alexis Watanabe led off with a single and then Decker drew a walk. With one out, sophomore Jess Calvini hit a ground ball to second but Hawks second baseman Sarah Yoos dropped the ball in an attempt to tag pinch runner Kristin Taft, which loaded the bases. Saint Joseph's starter Liz Mendez then hit Waggy with a pitch to force in the tying run. Freshman Vicky Lattanzio followed with a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Taft with the go-ahead run.
In the fifth, sophomore MacKenzie Velasquez and Watanabe led off with back-to-back singles, before Decker smacked a three-run home run to right to extend Lehigh's lead to 5-1.
Campbell took care of the rest, retiring six of the seven batters she faced in the final two innings to earn the win in relief. She scattered three hits over five innings with seven strikeouts to improve to 8-6 on the season.
Mendez took the loss, allowing two runs on three hits in four innings. Niki Carillo served up Decker's home run in the fifth, while Anna Lauterbach pitched a scoreless sixth for the Hawks.
Watanabe led Lehigh with two hits as the Mountain Hawks finished with eight on the afternoon.
The Mountain Hawks will host Holy Cross for three games this weekend in their final home Patriot League series of the season. Lehigh and Holy Cross will play a doubleheader Saturday and a single game Sunday at Kaufman Field with first pitch both days set for noon.
