BETHLEHEM, Pa. – After defeating Saint Joseph's on Wednesday, the Lehigh softball team looks to solidify its postseason position when the Mountain Hawks return to Patriot League play with three-games against Holy Cross at Kaufman Field.
Saturday, which is Lehigh's senior day, will be a doubleheader starting at noon. The Mountain Hawks will recognize their five member senior class prior to the series opener. Sunday's single game will also begin at noon.
The Mountain Hawks are 21-15 overall and sit atop the Patriot League standings with a 9-3 league record.
Lehigh came back from an early 1-0 deficit and scored five runs over the fourth and fifth innings to beat Saint Joseph's 5-1 in a single game Wednesday. Sophomore Morgan Decker belted a three-run home run in the fifth to give the Mountain Hawks the 5-1 advantage and Christine Campbell blazed through five scoreless innings of relief to seal the win. Campbell improved to 8-6 on the season and Decker now has a team-high six home runs and 34 RBIs.
Reigning Patriot League Player of the Week, sophomore Alexis Watanabe, led the Mountain Hawks against Saint Joseph's with two hits and two runs scored. Watanabe has a team-best .389 batting average and a team-high 49 hits.
Holy Cross is 9-16 overall this season, but is 5-4 in Patriot League play and won two-of-three games over a competitive Boston University squad last weekend. On Thursday, Holy Cross swept a non-league doubleheader from Brown, winning games 3-1 and 8-0 in five innings.
The Crusaders are one of three teams at 5-4 in league play, just a game behind Lehigh in the loss column. Bucknell is also in the mix at 7-5 in the league.
Colleen Ahern and Alex Gustafson have paced the offense, with Ahern hitting .317 and Gustafson pacing the Crusaders with 22 hits and 12 RBIs to go along with a .310 average.
Gennifer Durham and Julia Barrett have thrown the most innings in the circle. Durham owns a 4-9 record and 3.72 ERA with 46 strikeouts in 75.1 innings, while Barrett is 5-3 with a 4.31 ERA and 33 strikeouts in 61.2 innings pitched.
Lehigh swept Holy Cross in a four-game series last year at Kaufman Field, with then-sophomore Emily Bausher pitching a one-hitter with 13 strikeouts in a 4-0 victory in the series finale. This year, Bausher is 7-5 on the season with a team-low 2.40 ERA and a team-high 67 strikeouts.
Following this weekend's series, the Mountain Hawks will head to Hempstead, N.Y. on Wednesday for a midweek doubleheader against Hofstra.
