Lehigh downs Colgate 6-1 for first league win

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh men's tennis team snapped its two match losing streak and posted its first Patriot League win as the Mountain Hawks downed Colgate 6-1 Saturday on the Ulrich Varsity Courts. Senior Mark Goldberg clinched the senior day match with a win at No. 1 singles as Lehigh improves to 9-6 overall and 1-1 in the Patriot League.
Lehigh won two of three doubles matches and then prevailed in the top five singles flights.
Two of the three doubles matches were decided in tiebreaks. After missing last week's loss to Army, sophomore Mitchell Petersen returned to action in both doubles and singles. Petersen and Goldberg won 7-1 in a tiebreak over Luke Gensburg and Bobby Berkowitz to win 8-7 at the top flight. Lehigh's No. 3 team of senior Timur Chernykh and freshman Tyler Hansen won 8-6 over Nick Laub and Tom Haile.
Colgate posted an 8-7 win at the No. 2 flight as Alan Pleat and Archer McFail edged Lehigh's Ben Gilman and Jeremy Kochman 7-5 in a tiebreak.
In singles play, Lehigh captured the first four flights in straight sets. Petersen returned to action with a straight set win over Pleat at No. 3 singles, while Kochman won 6-3, 6-3 over Archer McFail. Goldberg clinched the match for the Mountain Hawks with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Gensburg at the top flight.
Gilman added a win over Berkowitz at No. 2 singles.
The last two singles matches needed three sets to be decided. Hansen defeated Laub in three sets at No.5 singles, while Chernykh fell to Jake Hirschberg at the bottom flight.
Lehigh will host Bucknell Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. before the Mountain Hawks visit Navy next Saturday.
