DOVER, Del. – The Lehigh softball team completed a four-game sweep of its games in the Hornet Invitational with two wins Sunday at Dover High School. In two games whose scores were eerily similar to the two on Saturday, the Mountain Hawks opened the day with a 9-0, five-inning win over Hartford and then held off a late Delaware State charge to edge the host Hornets 1-0.
Sophomore Morgan Decker hit a grand slam to lead Lehigh in game one against the Hawks, while four pitchers combined on a pair of shutouts for the Mountain Hawks, who improve to 8-10 on the season.
The Mountain Hawks jumped on Hartford early with seven runs in the first two innings. Sophomore MacKenzie Velasquez drew a leadoff walk and stole second. Velasquez was called safe at third when classmate Alexis Watanabe reached on a fielder's choice. Watanabe stole second and on an errant throw by catcher Sawyer Fried, Velasquez scored Lehigh's first run. After a walk to Decker and a sacrifice bunt by junior Emily Bausher, junior Cassie Waggy hit a sacrifice fly to right scoring Watanabe and a throwing error by Genevieve Morneau-Vaillancourt allowed Decker to score, putting Lehigh up 3-0.
In the second, Lehigh loaded the bases with two outs on two singles and a walk before Decker drilled a grand slam to right, her second home run of the year, to put the Mountain Hawks up 7-0. The grand slam was the first for Lehigh since Liz Lucas hit one against Colgate in April 2012.
Lehigh was kept off the board in the third inning but scored single runs in the fourth and fifth. Watanabe doubled to left to score Velasquez in the fourth while sophomore Jessica Calvini capped the scoring for the Mountain Hawks with a leadoff home run to left, the first of her career, in the fifth inning.
Seniors Ashley Quigley and Kelsey Lee combined on a three-hitter in the circle. Quigley went the first four innings, allowing all three hits while walking one and striking out four as she evens her season record at 2-2. She worked out of a two-on, two-out jam in the first and then started a 1-2-3 double play to end the third. Lee retired all three batters she faced in the fifth to close out the game.
Kaitlyn Meade took the loss for Hartford (2-11) allowing eight runs on six hits in 3.1 innings.
Just like Saturday, Lehigh's second game of the day against Delaware State was decided by one run as Bausher and freshman Christine Campbell matched zeroes on the scoreboard with DSU's Vanessa Ciocatto. Bausher pitched two scoreless, hitless innings with two strikeouts, before giving way to Campbell, who retired the first six batters she faced. Ciocatto did her part, limiting Lehigh to just two hits in its first four at-bats.
Campbell worked around a two-on, one-out situation in the fifth and a leadoff single in the sixth to keep the game scoreless.
Calvini led off the top of the seventh with a double to left center and after a sacrifice bunt and a strikeout, freshman Ashley Cole doubled home Calvini to give the Mountain Hawks the lead.
Delaware State (10-6) would not go quietly as the Hornets loaded the bases with one out against Campbell got Danielle Velez to hit into a fielder's choice, with sophomore Emma Capetz throwing home to force out the tying run. Kaitlyn Slater then lined out to Velasquez in right to end the game and give the Mountain Hawks a 4-0 weekend.
Campbell (4-3) earned her second win in as many days with five scoreless innings of relief. She allowed four hits while walking one and striking out four. Ciocatto was charged with a run on five hits in six-plus innings as she gave way to Tara Tursellino after Calvini's leadoff double.
Lehigh had six hits against Delaware State with Velasquez contributing two.
The Mountain Hawks are scheduled to open their home schedule with a doubleheader against Penn Wednesday at Kaufman Field. First pitch for game one is slated for 3 p.m. Lehigh will open Patriot League play next weekend when Colgate visits Kaufman Field for a three-game series.
