
Lehigh outlasts Niagara 4-3 in five-plus hour thriller

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – In a lengthy five-and-a-half hour match that came down to a third set at No. 6 singles, Lehigh edged Niagara 4-3 Sunday inside the Lewis Tennis Center. Lehigh lost the doubles point but battled back to win four singles matches, including the clincher from freshman Tyler Hansen to win its second straight as the Mountain Hawks improve to 8-4 on the season.
Niagara captured the doubles point with 8-3 wins at the No. 1 and No. 3 flights. Lehigh did post a win at No. 2 doubles as junior Ben Gilman and freshman Jeremy Kochman won 8-5 over David Raymond and Olivier Dufour-Coursol.
Gilman started Lehigh's comeback at No. 2 singles with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Inaki Belloso. Senior Mark Goldberg also posted a straight set win, downing Michael Elortegui at No. 1 singles.
Raymond picked up Niagara's first singles win as he took down junior Mitchell Petersen 6-3, 6-1 at No. 3 singles. The Purple Eagles also got a straight set win at No. 5 singles as Lorenz Schwojer bested Timur Chernykh.
Lehigh picked up its third point at No. 4 singles as Kochman rebounded from a set down to defeat Dufour-Courol in three sets. Kochman won a tiebreak 7-1 to win a tightly-contested third set.
In the deciding match at No. 6 singles, Hansen dropped the first set 5-7 to Mathieu Lacasse, but battled back to win the second 6-2 and won the match-deciding third set by a 6-3 score.
The Mountain Hawks will host Temple Thursday at 4 p.m. inside the Lewis Tennis Center.
