Lehigh bounces back with 6-1 win over Villanova

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – In its first match following a layoff of nearly two weeks the Lehigh men's tennis team snapped a two match losing streak with a 6-1 win over Villanova Saturday inside the Lewis Tennis Center. The Mountain Hawks swept the doubles matches and then fought through several tightly contested singles matches to win five.
With the win Lehigh improves to 7-4 on the season.
After missing Lehigh's last match against Bryant senior Mark Goldberg and junior Mitchell Petersen returned to the doubles lineup at the No. 1 spot and posted an 8-5 win over Kelly Donaldson and Mark Miller. The Mountain Hawks won the bottom two flights by identical 8-3 scores with junior Ben Gilman and sophomore Jeremy Kochman beating Michael Rosengren and Matt Colonnese at the No. 2 flight and senior Timur Chernykh and freshman Tyler Hansen downing Tim Abbracciamento and Bradley Noyes at No. 3 doubles.
Four of the six singles matches required either three sets or a third set ten point super tiebreak. Petersen was victorious in his return to the No. 2 singles spot with a straight set win over Ryan Peyton, while Kochman continued his recent winning ways with a 6-2, 7-5 win over Donaldson at No. 3.
Gilman delivered the match-clinching point for the Mountain Hawks, beating Miller 6-2 in the third set at the No. 1 flight.
Villanova's lone point came from Rosengren at No. 4 singles as he came from a set down to beat Chernykh in three.
The matches at the bottom two singles flights were both decided in super tiebreaks with Hansen coming from a set down to beat Abbracciamento at No. 5 and freshman Ethan Bogard defeating Miranda after dropping the first set at No. 6.
The Mountain Hawks will return to action on Sunday when they host Niagara at 2 p.m. inside the Lewis Tennis Center.
