Marist upends Lehigh 5-2 in battle of defending conference champions

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Two defending conference champions met in non-league action Saturday inside the Lewis Tennis Center with defending MAAC champion Marist downing Patriot League champion Lehigh 5-2. In a tightly-contested affair, the Red Foxes won two of three doubles matches and four of six singles matches to hand Lehigh its second home loss in as many weeks as the Mountain Hawks fell to 6-3 on the season.
Two of the three doubles matches were decided in tiebreaks with Lehigh's team of junior Ben Gilman and sophomore Jeremy Kochman winning 10-8 in their tiebreak to defeat Dalen Klassen and Trym Nagelstad at No. 2 doubles. Senior Mark Goldberg returned to Lehigh's lineup after a two-week absence. He and junior Mitchell Petersen returned to their No. 1 doubles spot but they fell 8-7 to Lorenzo Rossi and Will Reznek. Marist also claimed the match at No. 3 doubles as Matteo Giudici and Dylan Fletcher won 8-3 over freshmen Tyler Hansen and Ethan Bogard.
Singles play featured four matches that were decided in three sets. Reznek increased Marist's lead to 2-0 with a 6-4, 7-6 win over Petersen at No. 2 singles while Rossi rallied from a set down to defeat Goldberg 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 at the top flight.
Lehigh's two singles wins came from Gilman and Kochman. Gilman came back after losing the first set in a tiebreak to beat Klassen 6-2, 6-1 in the next two sets at No. 2 singles. Kochman improved to 6-0 in singles play in 2014 with a 6-3, 4-6, 7-5 win over Joseph Dube at No. 4 singles.
The Red Foxes took the final two matches, with Giudici upending Bogard in straight sets at No. 6 singles and Fedrik Bjerke beating Hansen in three sets at No. 5 singles.
The Mountain Hawks will host Bryant Sunday a 2 p.m. inside the Lewis Tennis Center, in their final match before spring break.
